What is this wire with the piston rings?

Hey, I've been wondering what this thin, flat, bent wire is that came
with the MRP 70cc cylinder kit that I had. I had no idea what it was
and none of the guides I had seen mentioned it, so I left it alone.

Here is a picture of the rings and the wire. Anyone know what this is for or
how to use it?

It usually goes in the ring groove before the ring.

hrm, theres only one of them so which one goes it go in? is it absolutely needed?

I would leave it out. Just something less to get loose in the engine.

i never install them either, sometimes they fit under the bottom ring, other times they dont - up to you
