View Full Version : Good Mods for a 2002 Vino 50cc

Hey I was wondering what some good mods would be to a 50cc vino, I am thinking about going with a stage 2, but I really want my scooter to look 100% stock, but be quicker, I am not looking to race it, just get around places a little quicker, I am also into finding a way to eventually hook up speakers and get bigger tire and better shocks if at possible for the 50cc. I am also going to probably do most of these mods myself, I can do the installation, it is the tuning I am most worried about, anyway I am new to this, and I don't know what a good set up is yet, I have been lurking around these forums for a few days while sitting in my cubicle and trying to learn as much as possible. Any ideas on what would be good mods? looking for a higher top speed, good acceleration, and a nice ride, anything comsmetic is a plus. Thanks for all your help.

First you need to figure what you want the scooter to do,
and how much money you have to do it.
A good starting point is to read the descriptions of the kits
on the sales page. Figure if that's enough, and if the price is
right for you, then go from there. If you're wondering if that's
the best you can get for the money, I'd say probably yes
for a bolt on kit (+ your tuning).

I am looking to spend about $400-800 I got a pretty good deal on my scooter, so I have the extra money to spend on modding it. I want better top speed, right now I can go about 37...Better acceleration. New tires and new shocks. I will study those parts and hopefully find something that will work for me.

You can go all the way up past the 60's in speed... what's
the minimum top speed you would like? If you only need
a little bit extra, say low 40's, it's going to be a lot cheaper
and easier, might not even need a pipe. The stage 2 will get
you into the low-mid 50's.

I would like to be able to go at a minimum of mid/high 40's or low/mid 50's I would prefer the low/mid 50's, but I can settle for whatever. I noticed in another thread you were talking about getting a:
1.)variaor for $100
2.) a MRP Intake and Carbon Reeds for $80
3.)19mm carb for $130
4.) clutch for $100
5.)Pipe for $140
6.) 70cc kit for $130
Totaling $680...at least I think that was you...if not I apoligize. I don't know what that will do for my scooter, but I would like to be able to go low/mid 50's minimum. Thanks for all your help so far.

Yes, that was me. It was in response to a member
wanting to have a shop upgrade the scooter, but
he would have ended up at a higher cost, with less parts.
That's a stage 2, with clutch, intake and reeds thrown in.
It's kind of a lot to do at once though. There's also doubts, on
my part, if that MRP intake is actually available. You don't
really need it though to get to 50mph. Reeds are pretty much a
must have item.. didn't keep my stock ones long after modding the
scooter, so didn't have any trouble, but they could break
and damage your motor. The clutch is another must have item.

alright, are there certain brands that you think are better than the others or is it kinda you get what you pay for? If I do all this, is the scooter still going to be street legal?

well maybe yes and maybe no.
your change to 70cc can cost you ticket for illegal equipment for a moped. or since mopeds can only go 30mph or so by deffinition
you might get one for no mc endorsment if your caught going 50 mph.
pipes are a cause for the cops to give you a second look too.
your scoot was approved as it came from the mfg. any modding
is a violation. exhaust espessally.
that said chanchs are your cool, but just follow the speed & traffic laws. don't give the cops a chanch to give your scoot a close look.

For Iowa ( I assume that's where you are. Your profile was no help.) moped laws go here:
Iowa Moped Laws (http://moped2.org/laws/Iowa.htm)
There was one requirement that I found interesting, "A moped must be equipped with a safety flag that extends not less than 5 feet above the ground attached to the rear of the moped. The safety flag must be triangular in shape, with an area of not less than 30 square inches, and be Day-Glo in color."
Wow!

I'm not the best qualified to answer that one, most of my parts
were bought used, or are modified stock. Stick with name brands
and you should be ok. I'd stay away from the iron cylinder kits
sold on Ebay, we've had quite a few posts mentioning breakages
very soon after intallation.

Thank you to everyone who responded, Oldguy I thought I put that I was in Iowa on my profile, but yes I am. On my insurance card it registered as a motorcycle. As for the mods I plan on doing to my scooter I am trying to stay clear of the exhaust pipe, I know a place that should be able to make a custom exhaust and hopefully it won't look as sporty, I really don't want to have to get one of those flags, they are really dumb looking...seriously. Anyway thank you all again, your information has been very helpful.

Honestly, I know lots of people with loud exhausts and nobody I have talked to has ever gotten a ticket for modding (and this is true of the motorcycle people I know too). This holds true for 70cc automatics, Vintage Vespas with SIP / Scorpion pipes, Chetaks with POC, etc...My Malaguti is obnoxiously loud. I pass cops all the time and have never had them even turn their head.

Alright, then it might just be easier for me to get the stage to kit with all the upgrades it offers me on the site. I think that will be about a little under $800, I don't exactly know what it will do, but it will be faster.

when you get the kit and are tuning the transmission, carb, etc...be sure to ask questions here if you hit a stumbling block. There are plenty of people here who have been through this before and can answer most issues.

Thanks, last night I derestricted my exhaust, I haven't gotten to do the other free mod, but the exhaust mod made my Vino quicker and it accelerates amazingly quickly now.

if you go to 70cc, then look for this exhaust:
YMS Exhaust Pipe (Vino50 2ST) YMS-5FH-B001
I have one on my 2004. It looks like the factory original but is bigger dimensions.
My Vino goes over 50Mph. I'm not sure how much faster, I've never had it wound right out.

Synthspike, can you send me a pm with where the YMS Exhaust Pipe is sold, it sounds exactly like what I want, you may have just made my day.
