View Full Version : Is This Normal???

My 2006 Kymco People 250 is liquid cooled. (It's the first scooter I've ever had that was luquid cooled.)
Everything runs great. The radiator window in the front shows it's full of coolant.
In the morning, when it's in the 40's and 50's, the temperature gauge never gets above the "normal" range.
In the afternoons, I've noticed the temperature can go all the way up near the red "HOT" zone if I'm sitting at a stop light for a long length of time. (Then, drops back down near the normal range while driving.)
In a car, this behavior indicates the thermostat was stuck. Or is this normal for a scooter?
Thanks for any tips...I discovered that the 2-year warranty on Kymco's is NOT transferable so I'll have to pay to have it looked at. (And I could, probably, change out the thermostat myself if it's not too hard to get to.)
Tks!

Sounds like it could be overheating when sitting, thats the behaviour I'd expect for an AC 2stroke since it receives less cooling at a stop, but LC it should stay in the nominal range all the time; just like on a car as far as I know.

Thanks.
I just called the dealer and he said that sounds like either the fan isn't coming on (I've never heard it) or the themostat is stuck open so I'm bringing her in after lunch. (The dealer is only a few miles from work.)

Well, I guess I'll have to troubleshoot it on my own...they mechanic had an old Vespa and had it all torn apart so asked me to bring my scooter in tomorrow or Monday and leave it with him.
So I'm going to take her apart and check the fan, check for anything blocked, check the thermostat, etc. (I have the service manual with some great photos on doing all that.)
Oh boy! :-)

I know that there was a point when all the Kymco Super 9's were all replacing the thermostat. I believe this was a warranty job too. I would check with Kymco directly to see if there is anything like this again.

Yea, the warranty on Kymco's is NOT transferable, I discovered...
Isn't that a swift kick in the pants?
So I'm going to take it apart myself and troubleshoot...make sure the fan is operational. If it is, then I'll just buy a new thermostat on the web and replace it.

Hmm, I didn't know the new ones had fans on their radiators. If I remember correctly the older Super 9s never had one. Just the thermostat to regulate it.

Yes, it's a 250cc.
The strangest thing happened...yesterday, driving home from work, it was as hot as it's been all week and, yet, the scooter NEVER overheated!
So I tried to determine what the difference was and the only thing was my raingear. I've stored my raingear under the seat in a zipped up pouch, so it was about 3 inches thick. I thought it was going to rain the day before so I took it out and had it in the back trunk of the scooter. (But I did notice it was very warm after sitting in there when I took it out.)
Could that thing, sitting right over the engine, have keep the heat in that much that the cooling system wasn't able to cool enough when I was stopped at a long light?
I don't know...but it was fine this morning and at lunch when I ran around to pick up some lunch.
I'll have to keep an eye on it.... :--- ::handleba :frog: DANCECLOWN

I really doubt it, but guess you'll have to wait it out to find out.
