View Full Version : More performance out of the 4 strokes

When the 4 strokes first hit the market I was asked to apply my experience with race cars to 4 stroke scooters. I kept meaning to but... Oh, the heck with it. No excuses. I just wasn't interested. :p

Than, sitting around today I had a thought. When the first go-karts came out they all had stock lawnmower motors. Why? Those were the parts that were available. The same is true for Honda motorcycles and just about anything else that is raced. It takes time to properly (and properly is the key word) engineer parts.

If there's a market, trust me someone will make the parts. What you, as 4 stroke owners need to do is show that a market does exist. Call, write and email the companies that make hi-perf scooter parts inquiring about modifications for your 4 stroke. They'll get the idea.

And now for the bad news. The first parts to hit the market will probably be poorly made, shoddy and almost worthless. Wait for the well known companies to come up with parts. They have a reputation to protect.

If I had to guess I'd say the first "high perf" part to hit the marketplace will be a high performance camshaft. Here's what I'd do. I'd buy stock cams from Yamaha and grind a few thousandths off the heel so that when you adjust the valves to the stock clearance you'd get a little more lift and a little more power. Of course when you start burning valves and go back to Sammy & Bubba's Hot Scooter Barn asking why they'll be long gone. ...pissed. They just wanted to make a few bucks.

Be patient, it will happen.

Hope this helps, :luvdoc:

I thought about mods like cams, turbo's etc...Just makes me wonder how strong the bottom end is, how strong the case is, and how good the bearings are. A weak crank would surely put a damper on things.
