I did the clean and re-oil routine for the foam transmission housing air filter yesterday... damn! How do they get those @&%! screws so tight from the factory??? Anyway, I re-oiled it with engine oil per the manual: "wet, but not dripping"... After riding it for a day, oil is leaking out of the tranny housing, presumably from the re-oiled filter. Should I pull the filter back out and blot it dry some? Should I be concerned that oil may have gotten into the tranny housing (I'm assuming it shouldn't be in there)? Someone with some experience with this, please let me know if I should be concerned. Thanks.

Dirt bikes traditionally used sponge filters and 20 years ago solvent was used for cleaning them followed by engine oil to help filter dust. Sponge filters are still used today in all dirt bikes and some street bikes but today they cleaned and re-oil with much safer and better products such as PJ1 foam filter cleaner and treatment. The cleaner is a water safe soluble cleaner that allows you to clean and rinse your filter in the sink then after a shake dry outside you spray on the treatment which is a tacky substance (not oil) that wont make a mess dripping or oozing but catches particles 10 time better them oil. A two can kit (cleaner and treatment) will last forever as I have 4 motorcycles that use sponge filters and I have been using the same kit for 3 years. So do yourself a favor and step out of the 70's to a product that has been around for a decade. :luvdoc:

Yeah, I'm going to use something like that next time. I started to use K&N air filter oil, but I thought, "No, the manual says engine oil, so engine oil it shall be!"
