Here is a nice write up on the Malossi over range kit... My next buy...

The price is around $300... probably closer to $350 or so... We'll see what the future holds for the price...

This new transmission system takes full advantage of the Malossi components already on sale last year, by adding several new parts that make the entire system particularly suited to the enormous power available. This latest system hinges on the new Fixed Pulley of the torque driver that has a larger diameter and the very latest specifications. The larger diameter of this pulley allows one to have a greater velocity-ratio range compared to the original pulley that has a notably smaller external diameter.

Malossi engineers have also taken particular care in realising this pulley right down to the smallest detail, using special materials and a particular type of thermochemical treatment that ensures exceptional surface hardness and therefore excellent wear and abrasion resistance. This new fixed pulley has been designed to offer perfect running if coupled to the Malossi Torque Driver that is already available and has the same diameter as the fixed pulley itself. In order to fully exploit the range of the new torque driver unit and the power ratings currently offered by competition machines, a new notched Kevlar Belt has been introduced with larger section and revised length to ensure maximum performance under all running conditions.

To complete the renewal of the transmission system and take full advantage of its exceptional specifications, the Multivar variable-speed drive has also been upgraded by fitting it with new tracks for the rollers and a new hub. This new variable-speed drive represents the evolution of the previous generations, the result of many years experience on the race circuit and the currently available CAD-CAM technology that allows top-level specifications to be obtained. The whole completion of the OVER RANGE system provides for the patented adjustable clutch Delta Clutch and the Malossi reinforced clutch cap Safety Bell Clutch.

New Malossi reinforced clutch cap SAFETY CLUTCH BELL art. 77 9218 is now available for scooters 50cc. The Malossi reinforced clutch cap has the function of protecting the user from a possible explosion of the clutch assembly. This protection was introduced at first in the racing scene, where this dangerous occurrence was rather frequent due to the high number of revs normally reached.

Indeed, it is known that the centrifugal force developed by the rotation of a system increases to the square of the number of revs. - Considering that normally the clutch assembly has a rotating speed of about 12.000 rpm, in particular conditions it may reach and exceed 20.000 rpm, and cause the explosion of the clutch assembly. Therefore, Malossi recommends the use of this high-tech product to anybody using scooters in order to ensure its highest safety.

Do you know where you can buy this upgrade? It doesn't sound like a bad deal, after you buy the variate, wing clutch bell, and delta clutch you spent $300. I think i found it at this shop buy my house but not sure if it is the same one. ***REMOVED*** They want $375. If you know where you can get it for $300 or $330 sounds like a deal. I also wanted to know since I have a Vino will this still work on it? The Zuma and Vino are basically the same right?

YUP! I have mine on the way as we speak from Erich for $349

Email Erich at sales@provoscooter.com- he is a Malossi distributor and can anything they sell.

FYI- these forums are to support the store, not the store supporting the forums... I don't think that is said enough! Erich could have popups every 20 seconds, scrolling ads and so on and doesn't! He sells this for $349 which was the best price I found on the net as well as he gives us these free for us/expensive for him forums to use.

Like I said... the price I gave was approximate... There is only a couple of places online that well them and I think they are mostly overseas... so you'll have additional shipping etc...

Erich on provoscooter.com, looks as though he might be stocking this in the future...

$349... that's about the correct price... like I said... somewhere in that price range....

I am getting a little comfused...

So do we need to upgrade the clutch when we get this as well?

It still uses weights and springs that have to be changed in and out to find the optimum balance of good take off with a good top end?

Anyone have real world knowledge of this thing?

Here is some more info but really doesn't answer all my ???'s..

Transmission & Clutch

The transmission on the BWS, as on most Yamaha motors, is very basic. The transmission has a large change in engine RPM as the pulleys run through their operating range. It is advisable to ensure the belt is in good condition even on a standard motor. As soon as a 70cc cylinder kit is added belt slip will become apparent. The cure is to fit a stronger main rear pulley spring and then alter the roller weights to obtain the correct engine operating RPM. The clutch may need stronger springs to increase the RPM when moving off from a standstill.

Better still is to fit an uprated variator that reduces the RPM variations. For high revving narrow powerband engines the use of a variator front pulley and a torque driver rear pulley will allow the motor to keep within the powerband of the engine.

The ultimate transmission setup is to use the new Malossi wide-range transmission pulley, which extends the speed range the pulleys operate over. However, it must be used complete as none of its parts are compatible with standard parts.

On higher revving engine units it may not be possible to fit strong enough clutch springs to the clutch to obtain the higher engine RPM needed for a quick standing start. There are aftermarket clutches available with lighter shoes and stronger springs which will overcome this problem.

The normal Malossi road clutch is a "fly clutch". The Malossi race clutch is a "delta clutch". The fly clutch should be adequate for most road engines unless they are very revvy and geared very high, where the clutch will have to do a lot of work during a standing start. In this case the delta clutch would be necessary.

The overall gearing can be changed by altering the input shaft gearing, the output shaft gearing or a combination of the two to obtain the overall gear increase you require. Normally only one gear set is required. Road engine units are normally geared to obtain 65 to 70mph.

If a standard 50cc engine is used with an aftermarket exhaust a small increase in gearing can be used to improve the top speed.

Standard drive belts can be replaced by uprated units. Malossi, DR and Polini all make belts for race use. If there is any reason to replace the original belts on a tuned motor then the uprated belts are worthwhile.

what I gather is that it recommends the upgraded clutch as well as the upgraded clutch bell (shoe or end cap, depending on what you call it)...

The reason is a higher RPM range of operation... and the stock one could possibly explode...

That's all I know of additional parts... it's recommended but not required...

I plan on ordering the clutch shoe... already have the delta clutch...

By the time you're staging and get to around stage II you should be looking to do more with the clutch and bell anyway.
