Hello, I have a 2001 Vino and I wanted to change out my break away lights and i was wondering when you change them are there holes left behind that you need to get caps for at least on the front or do you have to get a japan headlight housing? By the way I am new to the site and i have to say this is the coolest website for scooter i have ever seen, it has helped me a lot already. I just degoverned my vino and i love it.

I do not have a Vino, But, I remember reading that there are in fact holes that you need to fill/cover.
And yes this is a cool site.....many features such as SEARCH, Scooter Garage, and How-tos.

After you remove the stock OEM (N. American) turn signals you will have two holes in the headlight nacelle. This is an east fix. I took the caps off of a 20 oz Mountain Dew bottle *(same as a 2l bottle) painted them black, and they fit right ion to the holes, in fact the rubber gasket holds them in place, and to this date have not fallen out.
It's not worth replacing the nacelle simply because you can't! If you remove the rubber gasket altogether you're going to not have just a big hole, but a huge U shaped hole funning from the middle of the nacelle all the way to the fender about six inches. The only practable and reasonable to fill in the hole in the nacelle was the method described above.

Do you know if anyone has tried to put the crome headlight trim in replace of the painted one or no classic? If you were able to swap the the two the japan style does not have any holes to cover since those lights are standard in japan, and I think the crome looks better too. If this will work the only bad thing i see it the extra money for the headlight housing, so no big deal.

For model year 05, there is only the Vino Classic, the painted nacelle version is no longer avaialble. Regardless Yamaha doesn't sell that housing alone it comes with the full fender set at over 400 USD.

Wow over $400 well that is not worth it I could almost have a stage 2 kit. I emailed simon2001 just to see what they have ant options for me. Thanks for letting me know whats up. If all else fails your 2l bottle cap plug is a great idea.

I think that's the best way to do it, paint the caps black and you can't tell them from the rubber gasket. Simon2001 is not going to stock a headlight nacelle replacement since they do not have the same issue we have, but they do have a cowl in case you wish to remove your front nacelle and relocate your headlight to the wheel fender like the Old 49 Vespa.

I saw the headlight on the fender, its looks pretty cool but won't you have less visability since the light is not as high as it was, proubaly more for looks or style. I think it looks nice. I'm going use your cap trick for now. I think in the spring I am thinking of repainting my wife's Vino for a more personal touch I might just take the gead light assembly to my friend who does body work and automotive paint and have him fill the holes the repaint everthing. I might even try and put a rear light kit for a Vino 125 if there will be some body filling involved. Thanks again good looking out. :)

I was thinking of the 125 rear light too. I asked someone to send me some photos of them. I don't have a dealer near to go look at them. I think this would be a lot of work to mod your Vino classic body. I've been doing stuff to my legshield, and thats tough. The way the 125 light is recessed into the rear panel makes it look like too much work. You might be happier just buying the small light, I belive it is the asia style.
If you do decide to go with this, or have more info on the 125 rear light, let me know.

I to did not like the holes left in the head light panel, when removing the stock blinkers. I decided to cut them out and put a fiberglass patch over the hole. Only possible because I'm painting the whole scoot.
Heres a pic after one layer of fiberglass. Will put another layer on the top side then sand sand sand sand sand untill smooth.

you don't mind if i just use black caps instead of painting white ones black, do you king? caps off of say, a bottle of whiskey, are the same as soda bottle caps...

They still should be painted regardless of what color cap is used, I just used Mt Dew as an example. The paint actually gives the rubber gasket something more solid to grab on to. The oils left behind on the plastic caps during manufacturing will cause them to become loose under normal riding and will either slide out, or fall in to the headlight nacelle, and believe me it sucks when they slide in there. I tried the black caps without painting them, and they just slide as soon as they get warm.

Federal law, it's just not on scooters, but all motorcycles are to be between 24" and 36" apart on everything built after 1999.

so the japanese signals are like, 20" apart or something? so when you swap them out you're breaking federal law?

Pretty much, but luckily cops aren't going to bother to whip out a measuring stick to measure them. First thing the guys on the crotch rockets do when they buy a new bike is swap the signals. One of my chums in the 3rd-D of the MPD said even bored cops would have trouble with that one because he'd have to confirm it's a pre-2000 vehicle, then go through trying to figure out whether the dealer did the install. (Cause a dealer install somehow can bypass it!) If you notice the Venice and Geely have fender mounted signals but they are not operational, only the blinkers mounted on to the handle bars are.
Slight side note that ties in to this. In MD, the law here is great, you can not legal install windshield wiper blades yourself. And those vent shields if they were not installed by the dealer or factory, illegal. (I got nailed for it by a bored MSP, but my badge got me out of that one!) So doing any kind of mod to a scooter or motorcycle unless done by the dealer is technically illegal. I love being an ex-cop knowing all this useless info, LOL.

seen pics of my rear blinkers?
Look in my scooter garage...
Mine are about 6" apart... they are located inside teh rear break housing!
Looks so much better then those HUGE UGLY things sticking out... Can't even tell they are there until I turn the signal on...
