View Full Version : A very ugly comment received while riding...

I'm still pretty much in shock over this. I was riding to work last night, not bothering a soul (there weren't many souls to bother, very little traffic) in the right hand lane (so my slower speed didn't hamper what few cars there were from going a few more mph than me up to the posted limit) and a guy starts honking at me. I honk back smiling and waving, thinking he must love my scooter as much as me. He pulled up next to me and rolled down his window. He told me to do a wheelie, of which I informed him that I couldn't (smiling and laughing the whole time) and he replied, "That's because it's a piece of shyt" and proceeded to speed away.
What the hell did I do to this guy to deserve that? I was be-bopping along going to work as I always do, not bothering a soul.
He looked about my age (mid 20's) and it was Friday night, hopefully it was alcohol talking.
I would never dream of doing that to someone, even if I didn't approve of their mode of transportation.
BTW, he was in an extended cab Chevy pickup, nothing spectacular by any means.

I guess I have been lucky, no-one has ever bothered me on any of my scoots..... I only get the usuall friendly chit-chat (even from Harley and Jap bike riders)
hey now, don't dog Chevy trucks......... LOL :jesta: The truck wasn't red, was it?

Funny you wrote this. Last night a mercedes E500 was messing with me on the road almost running me off the road. This guy was pissed that I can cut right up to the front of the lines at red lights. Anyways it turns out we were going to the same place. When it all came down to it he tried to keep me from turning and almost ran right into me. I put the scoot in park and he had parked at the same time. He walked up to me and said" you almost got your ass handed to you" and my response was "wanna see who gets their ass handed to them now?" I'm not one to back down from anyone. So anyways he ended up calling me a loser and what not. I tried to get him to hit me so i could drop him and take his wallet but I guess that wasn't gonna happen so i laughed it off and told him i hope i ruined is weekend. Anyways it was a lot more funny to be there. It just seems its always someone who think they are super important that is trying to kill a guy on a scooter.

Must be a full moon or something...
Yesterday, at a stop sign, I was pulled up against a broken down
ALC scool bus. ALC is where kids are sent after being thrown out
of regular high scools. With a cop parked right behind the broken bus,
kids were yelling obsenities out the window, and threatening to steal
the scooter!
Up to now I've only had pleasant exchanges, and inquiries about
gas mileage.

After 40 I began to realize that allowing my blood to boil over was not a good thing , mostly because I could put my kids (small at the time) in danger. But I can sure relate to how you felt. These days the human animal is much more unpredictable as to what the heck they will do behind the wheel of a 3000 pound vehicle. I drive my new Vino 125 on small trips that are to inconvenience to fire up my GSF1200 like to the corner gas station store, mail box, community pool, and cruise the neighborhood for old ladies. If I need to get into traffic and long lonely roads where the crazy’s hide I have to be on my GSF1200 so I can put it into hyperspace drive while waiving goodbye.

That's right, it was friday the 13th. I've actually had several people tell me "nice scooter!" or something along those lines while stuck in traffic, and that's fine. But to say something that mean for something that I'm working hard to pay off and be the first thing I did "on my own" kinda hurt. I mean I laughed it off on the surface, but I still didn't like the comment.

Yup. I used to have a terrible temper not just road rage when I was 18-35 or so but I laid allot of that anger down realizing that life is just too sweet to act that way for what amounts to nothing. You can bet that it was worse on his character and health then on yours not to mention that he is still at risk of placing himself in a bad situation. All you have to do is take it as a learning experience on how to survive, live long and prosper.

Hi waterinthefuel, Don't let other peoples BS. bother you. Life is full of such people, and situations, you learn to take it in stride. The trick is to take ownership of yourself, and every situation you will ever find yourself in. "Be in charge of" what ever is taking place, view every situation as if it were taking place at a distance, even if someone is right in your face, always have an imaginary space between you and them, this puts you in control, reguardless of what ever is going on. Peace, and happy riding.

its legal in Cali... I wish it was legal here in Florida.......

yea its legal here and the CHP actually incourages it. Since the vino isn't legal to ride on the highway i'm not splitting lanes while cars are going 60-70 mph. Its really not that big of a deal and actually i feel safer in traffic when i split lanes cause the cars know there is no place to go and normally make room for me. I have only had that one major issue and I actually saw the same guy on the road today. I waved to him and he just shook his head so I know i just ruined his day again!! hahaha thats how I roll on two!!!

My dear father, may he rest in peace, always said, "99% of the people in this world are not worth the powder to blow them to hell". I always thought he was a little bit in excess on his estimation, but the longer I live, the more righter he becomes. I'm personally only up to about 80%, but it seems to grow every day.
Now on a serious note...are you absolutely certain it wasn't a Ford?
By the way, I did "the wave" to a sport bike today out in the country since it finally quite doing the Noah's ark thing in Houston. My wave back from the opposing lane 2 wheel was a big wheelie. I'm going to presume that was a hello.

Yeah, I'd be pissed at you too, you're on the road, you're a registered vehicle, you obey the same laws as everyone else. I would never dream of cutting around people like that, it's just *potty mouth**potty mouth**potty mouth**potty mouth*ing rude. You're already getting way better milage than they are, it doesn't matter if you're a few vehicles ahead of everyone else.
If I was on my scooter, and I saw you do that on your scooter, I'd want to kick your ass too.

I guess you don't live in california. It is legal to split lanes here. The California Highway patrol encourages it and has fought to keep it legal. But if you wanna go for a roll thats cool with me I gots me a screw driver in the scoot! hahaha SD SERPENTS represent!!! If it were illegal I probably wouldn't do it.

Since allot of people were talking about splitting lanes I will put in my two cents. It is legal in California I was stationed there before and the traffic was so bad in the mornings that on a motorcycle it was necessary. The law I believe was you couldn’t exceed 15 MPH splitting standing traffic or traffic faster then 5 MPH. If you were smart you wait for another bike to come by splitting traffic then followed in behind him. I still do it on my GSF1200 when I visit my daughter in LA, but wait for a big fat ship anchor (Harley) to come by and part the traffic as he rumbles his pipes. On my Vino I would never consider it because I would be worried that I might not be visible and get squashed and not enough power & speed to get away from a road rage clown. o_o

Heres what Ive done. If a impatient car starts to tailgate (aka-riding right on my butt out of impatience!) me for not going 57 in a 45 I will let them tailgate me full throttle- right up to the cars at the red light! I will then blast into the smallest opening and all I hear are tires skidding from the tailgater trying not to rear end the car in front of them. By the time I get to the light it changes and Im at the front of the pack blasting outta there. Luckily Ive only had to do this twice, so far, in my 20 years of riding.

 Hey Mark,
Brian here. I just bought a Vino 125 and as I cruise around the Woodlands Ive already almost been hit, ran over, killed 4 times in the two weeks Ive owned the thing; THEY JUST DONT RESPECT SCOOTERS! good grief! I typically go 5 to 10 over just to make sure I have a cushion between me and others behind. they just speed up more; big surprise. gotta "love" Houston area/Texan drivers............
yesterday this suburban went around a family walking with their little girl; and proceeded to go head-on with me. In shock I didnt say a thing (and im usually very vocal about other stupid drivers mistakes; plus out of respect for young ears that were present), so I just stared 'em down in anger and kept on going.

It's not a so much a lack of respect. It's mostly that they just don't see you. It's a fact of life if you ride two wheels. Learn to ride defensively. Expect the cagers to do stupid things. Remember, being right doesn't do you any good if you're dead right.
Ride paranoid. They are out to get you. o_o

Yup definitely can be scary out there with some of the morons trying to intimidate scooter riders. I can tell when I got some idiot speeding up consistently at every stop light tailgating my scooter. I usually just give them a back off signal with my hand, and occassionally I turn around with an angry stare down. I have a bad temper as well which I try to keep undercheck since getting older and having children, not worth decking someone anymore.

My first thought when reading this thread was how could I have missed this? Then I saw the dates... Anyway, the best responses always come to mind after the idiot is long gone.
Idiot - "Do a wheelie!"
WITF - "You first."
There was a thread on the svrider forum a while back where someone asked "What's the funniest thing someone has ever said to you on your bike?" I think the one I liked best was someone pulled up next to a rider, rolled down his window, motioned to the rider to open his visor, and then said "Do something stupid!"

Why are you so upset over this? The guy was clearly trying to get you pissed. I mean I've been as guilty as anyone at losing my temper with other motorists and I had developed quite a reputation for exiting my vehicle and physically attacking them over the littlest infractions. On my scooter though, I only had one time when some little 12 year old sh*t screamed something at me out the back of a passing SUV so I blew through my stop light and chased them down. When I got up next to them at another light, the father and mother were clearly making a point of looking nowhere but straight forward and the look on their faces was fear and the little sh*t with the mouth was ducked way down on the floor, so I let them go. My point? Chase them down and punch 'em in the mouth! Or at least make them think you're going to do it. Otherwise, it does you no good to get pissed or to stay pissed and you need to forget about this idiot.

This doesn't sound like you're over it to me?!? But in any event, these people are clearly cowards or they wouldn't say what they say and then take off, they don't expect or want to be confronted. I was simply explaining how to handle it if it ever happens again.
Quite frankly though, if the worst thing you ever hear during your lifetime is that your scooter is a piece of sh*t, then you're probably doing ok and I didn't fully understand why you were so outraged in the first place.
For future reference, you might want to refrain from "smiling and waving" at dudes that are beeping at you, you set yourself up to be screwed with.
But, glad you've recovered nonetheless.
