View Full Version : Post Derestriction
I just finished doing the variator derestriction. It was a 1.5hr job. To my surprise, my channel lock was not big enough to hold the pulley. Good thing I have a huge plastic vice grip that was big enough the wrap around the pulley. Getting the nut off the pulley and tightening up afterwards were the most time consuming.
I took my vino out for a test drive and got up to max 52kph (approx 32mph). About 3-4 kph higher than before the variator derestriction, but nevertheless well short of my 60kph (38mph) target.
I will grind out my exhaust a little more to make it smoother tomorrow night (my dremel work was kinda rough). Also I will do an oil change. Will these two steps help with my top speed?
During the variator derestriction I took off the three screws on the air filter to take peek inside. However, I can only open up the bottom portion of filter box. I can't get the thing off completely. Does anyone have any steps for replacing the air filter? I could see the bottom part of the foam like air filter and when I touched it, it felt really soaked with oil. Is this normal?
Thanks.

After struggling to get past 50kph, I spent a little more time on my Vino tonight and performed the following:
1. Cleaned the spark plug with wire brush
2. Changed the transmission oil
3. Cleaned and re-oiled the air filter
4. Topped up 2 stroke oil
Went out for a ride (past couple of nights in Toronto is so cold!!!) and my top speed is still 52kph, the same as before I got the above done.
Next to do will be to grind out the exhaust a little bit more. Beyond this, what else can I do to increase my top speed? New spark plug? Adjust air/fuel screw?

I have a 2001 Vino with 4500km (2800miles) on it. I guess it is broken in.... I would love to get that extra 8mph that you have with simply a exhaust derestriction.
Yeah your right on target there. I like the way the Vino runs after a full derestriction. About 1500 miles is when the Vino feels fully broken in.

I had my 2004 de-restricted at the dealership here in Richmond BC - they did the exhaust and the variator.
I easily get 60kmh, and have even hit nearly 70kmh on the flats.
Downhill with a tailwind I get the speedo needle to hit the high bean indiocator...I guess its around 80 kmh.
keep tweaking it - you'll get it right....I have abotu 2400 kms on my Vino (since August) and its running pretty good...smooth and fun.
I changed my spark plug at about 1500 km, adjusted the idle a bit (it was bogging down) and adjusted the mixture it seemed a bit lean...
now it's all good.

Go to the thread called
"got a vino? try this!"
After more grinding today, I have finally succeeded in derestricting my exhaust!!!
At first, I thought all pre-2002 Vinos only had a washer as a restrictor, so all I was trying was to "grind" out a washer. With my top speed still max-ed out at about 50kph, I was determined to grind more this afternoon. After 20 minutes of grinding, all of a sudden, a cone broke off to my surprise. I thought.... way a minute, isn't it true that only Vinos after 2002 had an inverted cone in the exhaust? After a few seconds, I realize I must have done the right thing.
Here's the picture on the cone:

I am surprised to see how much the exhaust opened up. I believe the how-to instructions for exhaust derestiction should include a picture of my cone above so that others will know what it is that they are supposed to remove from their exhaust.

That's right, the picture above is the result of my exhaust and variator derestrictions.
After I put everything back together, I immediately noticed the much improved acceleration. What others have said was absolutely right: if you start your Vino on full throttle after derestrictions, you will get thrown off the bike if you are unprepared! I'm glad I was easy on the throttle. My max speed on flat ground is now 62kph/39mph (I weight 150lb). That's right, I got the max speed I wanted!!! Acceleration is much much much improved.
I want to thank everyone who has given me any inputs.
