I've heard a lot about this, and was wonering if this is a possibility. Kevlar, and regular drive belts have a tendancy to fail when they get hot. I devised a way to solve/rectify this problem. Drill/cut holes in the outter cover of the transmission/clutch. This would be instead of the installation of fans, and whatnot... Here's a pic of my suggestion. Whatcha think?

unless you filter those holes somehow, i can imagine dust and other abrasive material making its way into the variator rollers, clutch and even further inside?
im pretty sure that would be bad news.

the biggest thing is...
Many many people are posting info stating that they are cutting big holes in the cover.... drill ing 1" holes in the cover, as well as even cutting the whole back piece off of it...
All of which would make HUGE amounts of air flow through... all causing the gunk to get in the tranny bad...
No matter what you need to get more air in there... just a matter of how much and if it's filtered... I'm not sure but it'd be pretty hard to get a decent filter in the case, still be sturdy, and allow the air to flow...

all i know is that honda elite drag bikes are run with out the rear part of the cover and do great the only problem is you have to clean the clutch bell every few weeks

Yeah, sorry it took me so long to reply...
That was Paint Shop, just an Idea. You could drill out the ends of the slots... and then use a die-cutter/grinder to take out the in-between material... either that or use the drill press to elongate the hole... then just use the grinder to clean up the edges.
Actually, if you weld in a piece of screen in behind the holes... this could prevent large items from getting in, however dust and fine sand may still be an issue. Something as simple as a feathered out cotton-ball or a piece of nylon bedding (pillow material) could work. The trick is, finding a way to make a removable/replacable air filter. I just heard guys wanting to put computer fans in it or other kinda odd sounding resolutions. Hmmm... someone should get on Yamaha for that one :)
