My son's GT 5 is about two months old with about 400 miles on it. Last week it started to cut out when going down the road. The tach would go to zero and it would sputter and act up.
I called the dealer and he suggested I replace the spark plug. I did and that seemed to be it for about three days. Now it is back at it. The next suggestion is to adjust the carb to make it run leaner.
Does anyone know which screw on the carb does this on a Zip? The manual is not very helpful.
I should also mention as the scooter gets warmer it does seem to finally stop this behavior. I almost wonder if it is the choke.
All suggestion and carb help welcome.

make sure sparkplug boot isnt becoming loose, the stock one is poor quality. bad connection would affect tach, so it might be an issue here.

Hi,
I have exactly the same problem you described. Let me back up and fill you in. I have had my Vento R4 for one year. It didn't get much use over the winter and it sat in the garage probably too long. I put a new battery in it. It ran OK for about a week. Then I let it sit outside in the ocean air for about two weeks without riding. When I next rode it it would start and run for about a mile before it would lose power and speed. With throttle open full it would go from a top speed down to about 30 miles per hour. Then it would just quit. When I could get it restarted it would run sluggishly again until I came to a stop light and then it would die. It would take a while sitting before I could get it to start again.
I took it to a dealer who replaced the spark plug, air filter, cleaned out the gas tank, cleaned the carb and did a general service on it. It cost $185.00 for the service. I got it home and rode it for about a mile when it quit. It has resumed the same behavior. It seems like it may be running too rich and not getting enough air. This seems like what is causing the engine to die. However, maybe it is the auto-choke?
Let me know it you get your kids scooter running properly and how you did it. I too would like to know which screw is the the fuel adjustment screw.
Good luck,

Well if my son warms his scooter up where the choke settles in it runs fine. If he starts it and takes off it seems like the choke is not adjusting correctly.
This can be replicated 100% of the time. Completely warm=runs great. Not completely warm=studders off an on until completely warm. It does, however, idle fine until it is warmed up.
This is not the way it worked when he first bought it. Not sure what can be causing the choke to not adjust itself correctly. He doesn't always have 10 minutes to let it completely warm up such as after soccer practice and when it begins to rain.
