View Full Version : Tranny cover venting

I have seen a couple of people that have said they vented their tranny covers to help it stay cool. I take alot of long rides and some are mostly running at WOT. So my question is does venting the tranny covers hurt anything, and do you just take a drill to it? Thanks.

take the cover off and if you want it to look nice plot the holes in a pattern, the only bad thing that can happen is if you live in a rather rainy place or on a dusty road you can get dirt and water inside your case, be sure to drill a hole or two in the bottom of the cover to act as a drain if need be

how many holes do you do? Also is it worth it?

i would say its worth it if you feel how hot that case gets, i mean if its a couple degrees cooler you are extending the life of parts by that much, I did a quite a few holes like more than 20 total.
If you have a dremmel I would do maybe 3-4 flat wide openings about a 1/4in tall front and back

I saw a topless tranny walking down the street the other day, he/she could've used some cover, vented or otherwise!

By the way, it seems to me when you drill holes into the cover, it exposes those parts to the dirt, debris and the elements. Doesn't sound too good. Those parts are designed to withstand higher temps anyway, I would just leave it alone.

I would think the wear form the dirt would cancel out any benefits
from running cooler too.

Here's something that might work great, I don't know what size
they are: filtered air vents from UNI. They list for $9.95

Did they tell you what diameter hole those fit? Those are nice.

Those UNI vents are most often used in/on air boxes of quads. But I dont know diameter. Plus, I dont use them on my quad.

i have a set of those lying around......... without walking out to the workshop to measure, I seem to think they are 7/8"

I still wouldn't vent it. If you block out the dirt and debris, high levels of moisture would still enter the area and cause deterioration to the belt and corrosion to the other parts.
Remember, the Vino (and presumably others) was designed to do 40+ mph from the factory but US regulations caused the restrictions to be put in place to keep it at 30 mph. I would imagine that the manufacturer would have vented it if there were a problem. It's the same cover in the US at 30 mph as it is in other world markets at 40 mph, the cover was not swapped out to meet US regs.
Bottom line: Vents? You don't need no stinkin' vents!

A stock and even stage1 bike doesnt need a vented cover. After stage2 the heat starts building up and starts to cause problems with some bikes.

there are plenty of companies that put vent in stock! Why? hhhhmmmmm, it must get HOT in there!

Yea..old Derbi covers come with a front scoop with a foam filter...but the 10 holes in the back arent drilled out..thats up to the owner. the back scoop isnt filtered...Spanish wanted seperate vario and clutch cooling.

This one I might try disagreeing with. Heat should make the moisture
evaporate, unless you go through a huge puddle or something.. then
the filtered plugs would help.

If they are 7/8 though, that sounds like too big a hole?

My guess is that Yamaha didn't have an issue with overheating, therefore they saw no need for venting. Plenty of other companies put vents in stock to address an issue that required venting.
It's 100 degrees here in Chicago before factoring in the heat index which bumps us up somewhere between 110 and HELLLLL!!! During the afternoon on Sunday, I drove my "Wino" wide open 25 miles, took care of what I had to do for less than 5 minutes, got right back on and drove back another 25 miles with barely a stop light and at speeds averaging 40 mph (no less than 38, as high as 45).
I had no performance issues, no overheating issues or any other issues with the scooter. I drove it again today for 8 miles, no issues again.
Somebody got on this venting kick and caused a bunch of other people to start to think that they need to vents theirs too.
I think Speedy Scooter is right, after Stage 2 it might be a good idea to vent. Either way is no skin off the back of my...um, back of my back. If anyone wants to vent theirs, go ahead. I just think it's unecessary and foolish.
Pretty soon you'll be venting all sorts of stuff (my girlfriend is a hot head, should I vent her?) then when will the madness finally end?!? ;;p

I have vented every 50cc scooter I have owned, with great results. It does make the belt and rollers last longer, at least in my experience. I have had no water or debris problems either. It seems most 50cc scoots don't get venting due to limited speeds of 40mph or so. The 125cc and up scoots get venting due to speeds in excess of 50mph. My 50cc modded scoots clear 50 mph and run higher rpm than a stock scoot, so they get vented. If you want to vent, vent away, if not, don't, it's all good.

Everey part of my Guti is tuned. (All Mallossi except the carb and exhaust)
Cylinder, Head, Vario, Clutch, Carb, expansion chamber, (see profile)
It does 70ish I ride it for prolonged periods at 60mph and short bursts of 70 (slighty more downhill) I have never had a problem with overheating tranny or any kind of overheating for that matter.

If I did, I would vent. I would however be careful of vent placement and would use vent filters. Just drilling a load of holes in the casing, as I have seen often, is asking for dirt and moisture problems.
