Installed a Yamaha windsheild on my 2006 Vino 125 and it increased my speed 7-10 mph. More comfy ride too, especially during bug season.

I have also considered adding a windshield but have been worried that it may slow me down with the added wind resistance. I am also curious which one you installed, there are lots a bug around here too. Thanks for the info.

I ordered it directly from Yamaha. I felt like my upper torso formed a parachutte with no shield to redirect the wind flow. I figured a shield could only improve things and it did. Need to install it at an angle with top leaning toward rider to get the aero benefit. Maybe 25 degrees or so? 10 mins to install.

I ordered one today for my wife's Vino125 to give her on her birthday. The scoot was supposed to be an "early" b'day gift, but you know how that goes.

Hey Lennox - I don't claim 7 to 10 on my Zuma but I did notice an improvement on flat and down hill runs. Maybe a mile or two. The comfort level is the main thing for me and not having to digest bugs.

I was just looking on the Canadian Yamaha site at the V125 accessories and noticed the windshield they show is different than the one on this U.S. site. After a little side by side look, they definitely are different in the picture but the part numbers are the same. Anyone have any input on this? Are they the same or different?

They're different. I've seen pics of the US one on the yahoo vino 125 group. It simply mounts with 2 brackets that screw onto the mirror posts.

I have the canadian one. Its pretty big....think motorcycle cop style :p . It mounts with a pair of handlebar clamps (which are giving me headaches) and gives a little bit of hand protection as well as the head and body sheilding.

Dennis--did you order the one from Yamaha for her? Let me know how she likes it. I have mixed feelings about windsreens, but if it will provide a bit of protection at higher speeds, I may get one. A little incresed speed would be an added bonus. :sunny:

Also alot of people people on the Vino 125 group have installed a slipstreamer windshield. Is it better quality than the Yamaha?

Hey guys, I have nothing to gain by exaggerating the speed gain. All I know is that it's true for me, I confirmed by looking at my speedometer! Pre-shield, top speed on flat with no wind was 50-51 mph, now top speed with shield under same conditions is 60mph. Also starting to see fuel efficiency gain. Pre-shield aprox 70 mpg, post shield aprox 85 mpg. For what it's worth, I'm 5'11" and weigh 185 if that makes any difference. Think about the concepts of concave and convex. My body with no shield was creating a concave shape which is less aero than the convex shape created with a shield.

Congratulations on your new scooter!

If you're considering putting on a windshield, I'd suggest searching the Vino archives for a thread from several months ago. My 50-year-old memory tells me it was not in the 125 forum. Anyway, I had a discussion going with some people where the conclusion was that the stock Yamaha windshields are not all the same. I happened to have gotten one of the inferior shields, which I would definitely not recommend to anybody.

While I have not personally seen the Slipstreamer shield, I believe I can tell by looking at the shape and mounting system that it's far superior to the shield I have. Fortunately for me, here in Texas I only need the shield for about four months. When that cheesy thing breaks -- and I'm sure it will -- I'll probably get the Slipstreamer.

Have to comment on WS making a difference in speed. Can't honestly say it has made an increase but definitely blocks the wind off my face which was very distracting. Can also comment on a head on wind slowing me down a lot. Just yesterday was very windy (nearby t strom approaching) coming down a long hill, let up on throttle and speed dropped over 7 mph, very quickly. Have had this same slow down expeirience a month or so ago on a flat road, maybe not 7 mph. But a definite slow down from a head on wind.

If you are looking for windscreens, go to JC Whitney!
They have a huge selection of universal fit windscreens for motorbikes and scoots at killer prices!
On motorbikes, they ussually call them windscreens , not windshields. Don't ask me why...

For those of you guys without windscreens, it also helps to hold your mouth/lips closed while riding rather than wide open.
You will gain about 3 mph!

The windscreen arrived yesterday so we rode over to Alabama today and picked it up. Its super easy to install and I've taken a few pics for those who may be considering one. Not the best pics but my intent is to show ease of installation and clean look of the windscreen.

I've bought accessories before with no instructions. This had simple easy to follow instructions (with pictures!) so if you're not mechanically inclined at all it is still a breeze.

I suppose the Canadian version gives coverage to the hands and is probably a plus considering the temps in winter but I prefer this version.

Clean look, no interference with putting something else on the bars. There is a stick-on neoprene gasket between the windshield and the mounting bracket. The holes lined up perfectly and it went on with ease.

Another view from the front. Behind the scooter are the special tools necessary for the job - a "17mm open end wrench" (adjustable wrench) and a flat blade screwdriver. The screws are plastic and have a fender washer and neoprene washer on the screw to protect the windshield. The flange nut on the back is metal. If the plastic screws don't hold I'll replace with stainless ones and add a little flat black spray paint before installing them. This little additon is a piece of cake! My wife loves the difference it makes and will probably never ride without a windshield again. Well worth the money!
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e382/onederdog/Yamaha%20Vino%20125/100_1814.jpg

The bracket is powdercoated black and the welds are clean. This is a quality accessory. I ordered through the dealer the scoot was purchased from.

Hoped this has helped.

Holy Hyper Drive, Batman! This really works!

Before the windshield, I would top out ~52mph on the flat, and peak at about 55mph downhill.

After the windshield, I am doing 55mph at about 2/3 throttle, 60mph top end on the flat, and 65mph downhill!

This thing is freaking amazing!

I got the Yamaha OEM windshield. What a difference in ride comfort, as well as top end!

Hard to believe, but having a windsheild makes quite a difference. The scooter is faster. I agree with Skrapiron's numbers. And the comfort level is much better. Can't wait for a brisk fall morning to see if my 25 mile commute will be any easier! Who would have thought?

PS: I went with the stock one for Yamaha.

I just installed my windshield on Thursday and I have to say, I saw and increase of about 5mph. I went with the Slip Stream Spitfire, I believe it's a little more adjustable than the Yamaha one, and less $$$. I haven't made the final adjustments yet, so I am getting all the deflected air right in the face.

I know after reading all the posts about which windshield to buy, Yamaha-Canadian Yamaha- Slip Streamer - This ones flimsy - that one looks cheap, WOW, my head was spinning. I decided to get the Slip Stream because it is more adjustable for your personal riding preferences or can easily be removed with out any tools if you want it off for the day.

I hope this helps those of you that are considering putting a windshield on your Vino.

I would assume that those windshields that DO NOT mount to the mirror posts but rather to the handle bars, like the Slip Streamer, can be used on the 125 or the 50, right? Do those arms on the Slip Streamer pivot? I could probably get a really big windshield in that case.

I want the big Canadian version but I have a Vino 50. Anyone have any idea if the clamps fit in an 11 or 12 inch space allowing it to be used on the 50? I spoke to the manufacturer but they won't sell me one directly but they did say it'll fit the 50cc...I want to confirm this.
What are the issues with the clamps that give headaches?
Lastly, anyone know of any good, reasonably priced Canadian dealers that might ship to me here in Chicago?

Thanks

I know that yamaha canada lists the same windshield as their accessory choice for both the 50 and 125...I'm not really sure what you're looking for though in regards to the 11-12 inch space.

The trouble that I (and I believe others) have been having with the windshield is that the connection that holds the L-shaped bar to the handlebar clamp tends to rotate even once it it tightened (and lock-tited) backwards so that the top of the shield gets ever-closer to the riders head. Its a gradual process but it seems that the tourque generated by the wind pushing on the screen is greater than we can achieve on the bolt....

BarryT

I have cured the "rotation" problem. All it took was a simple hose clamp....I'll try to send a picture.

I attached the hose clamp to the handle bars above where the support rods cross them. The hose clamp prevents the support rod from "tipping back" with the force of the wind. It's always windy here and the screen has not moved in about three weeks

Yep, that's the one. I like the fact that the hands are covered too as well as the added height. I was driving my Vino 50 all last December, January and February here in Chicago if for nothing else other than to give the proverbial middle finger to ol' man winter! The manufacturer forwarded the name of a dealer in Alberta so I'll probably call them.
Can you tell me what you paid for your Canadian version so I know if I'm gettin' the shaft? Anyone have a good dealer recommendation?
Thanks

By the way, the 11-12 inch space is the measurement between the two grips on the 50, just wanted to make sure it fit between there. I really appreciate your attaching the picture, now I know where it clamps and how.

You're telling me! When the Mayflies hatched, I had about a billion of those suckers splattered on my windshield and on my visor!

All it took was one large beetle bouncing off my cheek at 50mph to convince me of the need for a face shield!

My wife and I rode downtown last Saturday to a stage show. Parking in Da'Burgh is near non-existant. To make matters worse, the Pirates were in town playing the Mets. All of the lots were full to the gills by 1800. We snuck down an alley behind the theatre to a surface lot that was 'full'. There was one spot, next to the fence, about 3 feet wide. I asked the lot attendant if he had room for us. He chuckeled and pointed to the fence. Best of all, he only charged us $5.00 for both bikes!

Riding home was cold. I mean COLD. The air temp was low 50's. I'm glad I took my riding leathers! It was the first cold night with my windshield. It was a dream compared to what it was like back in April, with no windshield.

As far as the spacing goes i don't think it'd be a problem for you. ... its a fairly univeral setup and the brackets could be mounted at nearly any angle with some simple rotation of the hardware.

Sorry about that folks but I forgot about posting pics. I have been riding now for over a month and maybe 300-400 Km with this simple mod and the screen has not moved. My normal speed around town is 50-60 kph but I do 70-75 kph on local collector arterials now and then. This is a windy place and I'm often heading into a 40 + headwind ....so if the screen was going to move it would have happened by now. All I did was put some "blue" ( removeable ) Loc-tite on all the set screws and tightened them normally. Then I lined two ordinary hose clamps with a bit of old bicycle inner tube ( so as not to scratch the chrome ) and attached the clamps to the handle bars right above where the windscreen support rods cross over the handle bars...please see the attached picture.

Dani--it looks as though there is a problem with the current Yamaha website when you try to look at scooter accessories-when you click on accessories it shows a Riva 125 scooter, not the vino 125. You could contact your dealer or check one of the online websites that sells accessories for the Vino. I found a good dealer and bought my BIG Canadian windshield. It took me a short while to mount it as there are absolutely no instructions as to placement of the nuts, screws, washers, or anything but a little common sense went a long way. Also mounted it in a friggin Chicago wind storm with no second set of hands to assist me.
Anyway, I was looking for a rubber sheath or something to put between the clamps and the bars to prevent 1) scratching and 2) slippage but couldn't find anything that was thin enough. Then I wrapped the bars with electrical tape in the mounting area but the clamps dug into the tape and ripped it a bit. So the final was that I put a piece of electrical tape on the inside of each clamp to cover all contact areas. Then I mounted them to the bars.
I don't know if the bars are scratched underneath the clamps (though my OCD makes me want to take it off and check) but I am going to leave it the hell alone. If you have any slippage problems, try the tape and also get a man to tighten the bolts really tight for you. I tightened so tight I have bruised palms from the allen wrench but it's not slipping...ever.

One question though, I have mine mounted in such a way that the shield is raked back slightly which looks cool but I'm not sure if this is the way it's supposed to be or if it's due to my clamp mounting postion. Wondering if this still provides (key word) "OPTIMUM" wind protection or if it's better straight up and down. Anyone know?

Good idea Lennox, that may have worked. I had a piece of rubber I was going to use that I now am thinking looked very much like an innertube. Went to the hardware store to find something similar to no avail.

BarryT, I'm 6'1" myself and was afraid that I would be exposed to the wind too. But the "flip" at the top of the windshield seems to send almost all of the wind over my head but my hands seem to get some side winds though not too bad. I was thinking of playing with the angle but for me it would mean finding a new place for the brackets which was harder than I originally anticipated for the Vino 50.
Maybe I'll test it out some more and determine whether or not it's worth playing with anymore.
I have all kinds of more important stuff to be doing and yet I can't stop screwing around with this scooter....I think the last year has been my most unproductive year of my life! I think I need a shrink specializing in scooter addiction! ..weird..

I bought and installed the SpitFire S-06 last week, definite improvement in overall speed. When I first bought my 125, best I could get it up to was about 55, downhill. Now, I can easily do 50-55, and I got it up to 70 on the downhill today.

As far as angle, the instructions that came with mine suggested you angle it at the same angle as the fork.

I just ordered the Yam windshield- part # is ABA-5YR03-00-00. Does anyone know the availability of paint that matches the Yamaha silver so I can paint the windshield frame?

If you’re a perfectionist you could call the dealer or email the manufacturer and get the color code numbers for the silver Vino paint, then just take that with you to an auto paint shop and get a pint size mixed can for your sprayer and save the rest for your first crash. The cheaper rout is to take your rear rack off which if like my Vino is the same exact color and take it to your local auto parts store and try and find the closest silver touch up pain you can find against to chip samples. Because the windshield frame is not exactly attached to or next to a painted portion of the bike, it should blend in good enough for girl cruising.

are these problems coming from the current OEM Yamaha windshield?
because it seems like it connects diferently, to the bar that holds the mirrors.

They are both considered OEM Yamaha windshields. The Canadian one doesn't mount to the mirror posts, the US one does, but they're both considered OEM equipment.

I could swear I saw on here where someone told me what windshield was the proper universal to get from JC Whitney or some other inexpensive one but I just cant seem to find it. Anyone have an idea?

Ok I found it, it was in another thread in the private forum. The Slipstreamer Spitfire 7/8" Universal.

I don't think any after market windshield as they are usually very inferior especially in mounting can beat the OEM tall windshield that attaches to the handlebar. For an add on windshield its the best I haver ever seen. In the long run the OEM windshield would probubly be a much better value then a shaky thin after market job for a savings or $20. Simple trucks from JC Whitney are one thing, windshield that must fit properly is another.

I would love to have the OEM, but I only ride about once a week usually and thats the only day I know I dont have to pick up my daughter from daycare, I managed to find the Slipstreamer Spitfire for $54 shipped.

I had forgotten the price on the OEM $96 with shipping. Please post some close-ups so we can see it as it might be a better alternative.

Gunz, I found the OEM for 80. Just google "Vino 125 windshild" and you'll get a bunch of hits. Pick the cheapest!

The cheapest I saw it was 76.

Looks like it will be delivered today. I hope to install this week. I have to finish up the redesign on my Hombrew Club's website, so hopefully I will get it done before the weekend

I find an increased mph of 7- 10 mph with a windshield a bit hard to believe.
I have the slipstreamer S06 & perhap a 3 mph increase, tops....much more comfortable, though

argggghhhhhhhh I HATE FED EX!!!! My windscreen arrived broken into 4 pieces! I have had more problems with them. The box clearly says Fragile and it looks like an elephant has been playing kickball with it. There was not one side of the box that wasn't smashed torn or ripped. So I'll have to post the pics next week when my replacement is sent.

I hater to be the one to tell you this but "unbreakable" doesn't exist. Anything will break if enough force is applied.

I don't quite understand where anybody thinks something is unbreakable. I mean it's tough, but run into something hard enough it's going to give. It was packaged pretty well, so I don't think even FedEx could break it in it's box.

What was that windshield made of? Glass?

Was it here that I read of some scam through Motorcycle USA--sending people broken windshields and then refusing to give credit--saying the customer broke it?

I called the company and they contacted Fed-Ex who will be coming out tomm to pick it up to return and exchange. I ordered the Slipstream so its the hard DOT approved plastic. It was obvious that something very very heavy and large was slammed down on the box.

Also those who think any windshield is unbreakable just turn on your tv this sunday and watch NASCAR. Million dollar race teams that can afford anything, when those cars roll the windshields still crack and they are made of Lexan.

I installed the offical yamaha vino 125 windshield, I just ordered it from a dealer, and installed it myself yesterday.

I've noticed mostly it is a much much more comfortable ride what without all the wind blowing right into my face, but I also feel that the scooter is performing much better.

I don't know about a top speed increase since I'm still breaking her in, and don't want to test that just yet.

I can attest to the fact that the windshield *definitely* helps performance. I travel the same route to and from work every day. I have the slipstreamer spitfire windshield and it is "quick release" removable (two little wingnuts and it just pulls off... cool!)... Riding without it reduces my top speed by at least 5mph and slows my acceleration significantly. I have ridden with and without it back-to-back and there's a marked difference.

...Granted, I still like to ride without it sometimes for the "wind on you" feeling! :)

SL-- I have the slipstreamer as well. Now that the warmer weather is here, I will take it off sometime and compare the difference in performance. I hadn't wanted to remove it because it took a long time to tweak it to just the right position, but it is a snap to remove and I now have the angle adjusted correctly.

Slipstreamer is a great company--I had broken one of the little plastic covered winged allen fastening screws and called them & they sent me free replacments :)

Suze,
I just put little marks on the bottoms of the "stalks" for the windshield where they go into the brackets so that I can put them right back where I had them and they don't show up when installed.

I FINALLY ordered mine today off of Ebay. I ordered the tinted one. I'm excited to see what comes of it. What is it made of? I would like to see if I can drill holes down each side so that I can install some spikes.

Hi. I'm new to the board but been lurking for a while. Anyway I bought a tinted spitfire for my 07 125 and it was to small for my taste(I'm bigger than most people) so I replaced it with an Yamaha windsield this morning. Long story short if anyone would like to try a spitfire let me know and we can figure out a deal.

I'd doa search because I have read the same complaint from other people and they said that you just need to tweak the windshield to the correct angle. Once that was done they were very happy.

It's not adjustable. Also the thing jiggles around like crazy when you go over even moderate bumps. There's no support in the middle, which it desperately needs. I DO NOT recommend the Yamaha OEM windshield for anyone who cares about their hearing. It sure does look cool, I'll say that for it.

Yeah, I'm gonna try the Slipstreamer Spitfire 06, as I've heard nothing but good about it. I have heard too much bad about the OEM Yammy windshield and that it is non-adjustable is a big minus. Too bad they have to sell an OEM product that so many people say is junk. They need to redesign it. And they want so much $ for it too. It does look good. Someone on the Vino125 Yahoo group mentioned the Slipstreamer CF-50 which is taller than the 06. I think maybe people are going with the Yammy windshield because it seems bigger and will hopefully offer more wind protection for taller folks but then they end up disapointed because of the flimsy construction. Anyway, maybe the CF-50 is worth checking out too, if you are tall, Amazon has it.

Sooznd mentioned something about needing earplugs after installing her Slipstreamer, so I'm just going to go alfresco. My dealer, Grand Valley Motorsports, is giving me a hard time about returning it, but I really didn't expect anything else from the worst retailer I've ever had the bad luck to do business with in my entire life. I guess Yamaha will let anyone sell their product.

I've already taken it off and I wasn't imagining it, my scoot is nice and quiet again at speed.
