View Full Version : Half way to a really cool tranny mod

Morning!

While looking into a replacement for the rear pulleys, I found an interesting
mod page. Someone has fit a massive Piaggio rear pulley in the Minarelli
case. (http://fpp.hamradio.si/roost/tech/pulley/)

This is only half way, since for a really great mod, the variator
should have the same diameter. Wouldn't it be great (me thought...),
to have all the upgearing handled by the belt and pulleys? No
compromises (I think..) between low end pick up and top speed.

I really wish that Polini, Malossi and the rest gave a little more
info on the sizes of the variators. Pulley diameters, inside diameter
and length of the bushing etc.

Anyways, this has got me thinking in all sorts of directions, and what ifs.
How big are the transmission parts for the GY6 motor? Maybe the ngine
case could be machined to take a GY6 crank, and stick the 2 stroke
cylinder on it... then attach the GY6 vario. Idle and time consuming
thoughts.

On another forum, this was mentioned a few months back. Consensus was its not worth the time or effort. You'd have to searchfor the reasons why as I cant remember.

Good luck, and bettr luck trying to find the right pulley :)

Too much time and trouble seems to be my specialty :)

Kidding aside I'm looking into a Honda Dio rear pulley. That's
probably mentioned on the thread too. I'll check into it.

It's just appealing that it might be possible to short circuit
the big dollar Malossi overrange, and upgears etc. solution,
with parts that peaople could be throwing away on bigger
scooters.

The Vino seems to be taunting me with promisses of an extra
5-6mph. It's right there in the tranny. It's being a B*ch about it,
hence my threats of stripping it down and drilling it a new oversize
crank bearing hole!

Well if the "zumahead" dude can get over 60 with three parts, I would think you could get 70 from the vino with the same mods.

heres the reason why its not worth your time, as quoted from the thead I was referring to...

"All you'd get for all that work and money is lower effective gearing. Since the front pulley
diameter is unchanged, the rear pulley would never open completely. The overrange has a
larger rear pulley, but also a wider front pulley, and uses a wider belt. The Piaggio pulley
swap is a big job, expensive, and pretty much a waste of time unless you can find the right
variator and belt combination. By the time you've gone through all that, you would have
been much better off just buying an overrange."

:( I guess... I don't like the Malossi overrange due to the loss
of the starter. There's a Malossi "rear pulley system", that I don't
think is part of the overrange. Unfortunately it's over $160, and
I don't know if it's compatible with the stock variator, as far as
belt type... belt cross section-wise. I'm assuming that whatever
it's diameter, I should be able to find the correct size belt. Correct
in terms of using the whole stock variator, even if not the whole
upper end of the rear pulleys.

Anyways, just won a Honda Elite CH80 rear pulley on the auction site
(see pic). Unfortunately I was too busy at work today to do any research
on shaft size. Might be too optimistic to think that this is exactly what I'm
looking for. At worst I get to take a rear pulley apart without messing
with the one on the scoot. I went for it based on this exchange on an
Aprilia forum post:

"Hey iiph, have you tried chaging the rear pulley of a Yamaha Jog to a rear pulley assembly of a Honda Dio2? We just have to do some machining on the primary gear shaft, then same clutch still been used but with stiff spring for higher RPM. Dio 2 or Honda Elite rear pulley system opens quite larger as compared to yamaha jog rear pulley and also i noticed the belly on the other half of jog's rear pulley....it prevents the belt from setlling on the innerside of the rear pulley. "

Zuma- I downloaded that video and searched frame by frame for a mph
symbol, and found it. For whatever that's worth.

I think the only way our Vino would ever see 70, would be after a few
seconds parked in the left lane of the interstate.

The loss of the starter is bc the system is for a race bike ( no ignitions!!) Wider vario and wider pulley mean wider belt angles so no e-start. No tuner uses the e-start anyhow. If you can use the e-start on midrace+ there is somehting wrong with your compression!
bigger probelm is that torque drivers for yamahas are either 33 or 34 mm. NOT compatibale with each other. Zuma is 33, while everything else is 34. Sure with teh right tools, u can make it fit but without more power all you are doin is moving the powerband aroung. Compromises. Nothing gained overall.

Hi Str8, I'm convinced there's lots to be gained... well, maybe
not lots. The scooter acts just like when it had the restrictions.
It has a top speed that doesn't vary much with rider weight, a
few mph wind, nothing. Before that speed was 30, now it's 40.

Also, it rockets to 35, then slowly gets to 40. I think that's the
belt being squeezed down the rear pulley, those last couple of mm,
after which it can't go lower. If the rear opened wider, and didn't have
that lip on the bottom, it might rocket straight to 45.
