I got twenty books on scooters, and about 25 on Mustangs. Don't even get me going on about the number of books on lighthouses and boats. And I'm at about 90 or so on photography! 12 on VW's is nothing but an indent between the Lincoln books and the hot rod books on the book shelf.

It is strange about scooters and VW's. Maybe it's facination with air cooled engines? (or engines that smoke?) :)

Here's my lifetime list
77 Rabbit
81 Rabbit Convertable
79 Camper Bus
81 Diesel Rabbit
88 Jetta (my current ride)

My college roommate is a VW maniac (though no scooters yet, he prefers boats now) and a year ago drove a flat bed truck 14 hours from Washington state down here to San Francisco to buy a Subaru engine that he mounted in his Ghia. Talk about a mod!

Davey-boi

Wow, how did that work out?

Last time I talked to him about it (a couple of months ago) it was still sitting in his garage. Apparently there is some sort of a kit for mounting the thing (for some reason they are very similar in size and shape--I think he told me that Subaru actually designed their engines off of the VW ones.) I can't imagine its an easy thing to do kit or no kit, (but major power upgrade once its done).

Cool fellow VW owners. I have a 1974 Ghia that i have been working on for a few years I have it almost done now. It has a brand new 1600cc motor with the hydrolic lifters so no more adjusting valves, new tranny, new front end, shocks, tires, drop spindles, new coupler for smooth shifts for the tranny, new gas tank, windshiedwiper motor, battery. Also when i put the drop spindles on, I had the front fender wheel lips rolled over. I did this because of a slight rub on the tires when you make a u turn, after i did this no more rub and you can't tell that anything was done because nothing was shaved or cut. I also put in a new fuel sender and original fuel guage. It needs needs paint and interior. I will paint this spring or summer. i am going to start work on the interior as i have a big stereo system i want to install. 2 phoenix gold titanium amps 1 for my 9 in mid bass, these are titanium elite speakers and that was right a 9 in mid bass with a 2 1/2 mounting depth, cool huh? The other 600 will run a set of 5 1/4 Titanium elite compotents then i have a titanium 800.1 for the bass and that is for a 12 inch Titanium elite sub. I have all the little bells and wistles for this system like all the read out guages for the amps votage and temp ect, a 20 frad powercore, 2 batterys, isolater, time allinement control box and to control it all is a Alpine iva-c 800 with the dvd player and changer. When i get it all done i will take pictures for you all to see if you would like.

There's a company in L.A. called Kennedy Engineering that makes the adapter plate to bolt a subaru motor to the VW transaxle. It's a real popular thing with sadrails. I can't imagine it's too hard seeing as though there's only four bolts to hold it on to the VW trans. The other thing you have to make sure you take care of is the water cooling. The water lines need to be routed to the front of the car for a radiator unless the radiator is placed on the underside of the decklid.

Wow... I used to have a real soft spot in my heart for VeeDubs. I had a brown Superbeetle, an orange Beetle, and a gold Ghia. Complete engine rebuilds could be had for $299 back in the 70s and you could even replace that flat windshield on most of the bugs for less than $100. And they went so well in the snow... except that the air channels for the defrosters were usually so rusted out it was common on cold days to see VW drivers s****ing the frost off the insides of their windshields as they drove down the road!

All of the old aircooled VWs are rusted out junk in the north now, but you can still see clean ones driving around in Florida. I'd be tempted to pick one up there to bring north, but then I'd hate to drive it on the salt covered roads up here!

Erika

p.s. LOL I guess the auto-censor thinks I'm trying to slip in a dirty word! Anyway, by s****ing, I meant ice s****ers... those thingies that you "wipe" the frost off of windshields with. Everyone has them in the north! ;)

Actually Erika, my bug is up for sale! Restored that baby myself, less than a year ago from the ground up. Two toned baby blue and white. She's a real 1964 cal-looker (no chrome trim, white solid window rubber, lowered, shaved turn signals, ect). New white interior, 1800cc dual carb engine. Man, she's my ultimate beach cruiser :sunny: !

Why am I selling her? Well, on my first restoration I overlooked the importance of electrical and all the gauges don't work _o . I really don't want to spend a good $500 on quality gauges PLUS I need the dough to fund my latest project.............. a 1963 LINCOLN CONTINENTAL!!!!! :naught: :yippy:

Air cooled VW is a lot different than the VW you're talking about.

I agree and I think a lot of the appeal of the air cooled VW is the "tinker factor". Lets face it, what other vehicle can you modify so readily (and inexpensively) and have so much fun with. Of course other than the scooters. My VW project is a Mini T pickup dunebuggie on a 69 Chassis. If I ever get around to getting a digital camera I will try and post pics (also figure out how to post pics haha). Enjoy your new ride Jered. Most VW parts are pretty cheap even the performance ones. I have an old Porsche 914 which is just a Porsche body and all but then a 1.8 liter VW motor. I have been looking at parts for it so I can hop it up a little and they are pretty reasonable prices. The way I look at it is that a 914 is either a cheap Porsche or a high end VW. :ll

however, I do love my Vdub's... IMO one of the best cars ever made... and plan on keeping this one for a long while... so a MAJOR restoration will be in order and probably a turn key 1915 engine or maybe a 2110 or so... a "freeway flyer" tranny... to round out the restoration...

but that will be years from now... when it does happen, new fenders, floorpans, lights (as the plastic cracks after the 31 years it's been around)...

needless to say a good 5-6K will be put into it when and if I can afford it in the next few years...

Can't wait to get my Manx clone up and running again for the spring. As I told Lennox in a PM, it's been through several reincarnations since I got it 10 years ago. The first time I tore it down I dicovered no less than 4 coats of paint over the original gelcoat. When I first got it some kid had used it for a boonie basher and the rusted pan and tunnel were torqued from all the stress. I pulled the body off and had a friend cut me thick piece of plate steel and weld in in for a floor and also reinforce the bulkhead. Since then it's gone from an off-road buggy with 33" mudders on the back to a clean drag-style street buggy with lowered roll bar and windshield and 15X10's on the back and spindle mount 14X4s on the front. Think it's gonna be somewhere in between this time.

I got my MiniT last year to fix up and make sort of a show street buggy but haven't had much time to do anything to it. It won't take much to make it streetable but money and time seem to both be rare these days.

it's not perfect... but works for me...

I always try it myself first... it's more rewarding... then use a pro as a back up! LOL!

speaking of which... me and the kids are camping in the front yard tonight...

had the space heater burning for a couple hours now and it's toasty warm...

might take pics, but probably not...
