View Full Version : Slow bike after deristriction

I bought a used Vino with 1000miles and the bike only goes around 37mph.
I figured that the variator governor was still in the scoot, so today I opened the bike up to find that the governor washer was not there.

So here is the concern. I weigh only about 150lbs and the bike is deristricted, yet top speed on a flat is around 37mph. Downhill, I can go around 43mph.

What could be the reason I am not getting 42+mph as suggested on Provoscooter? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Did you de-restrict the exhaust?

37 is close enough to be well within the average top speed. Thats all shes got. 37 on the low and 42 on the high. Just depends how far your speedo is off..

i didn't personally, but I checked today, and the exhaust has been derestricted.
Any possible causes that may be slowing the bike down?

I don't know about the accuracy of the speedo, but I would imagine that most of our stock Vinos came with more or less the same speedo configuration.. and I assume the 42-44mph achievable by the deristrictions were read on the speedo and not on GPS etc?

I'm not asking to go any faster, it's just that I want to know if there may be something wrong slowing the bike down.

Mine will do 43, but it has 200 miles on it. I'm sure 1000 miles worth of roller and belt wear may slow you down abit. Depending on if it was ever warmed up, or just taken out cold to WOT everyday for 1000 miles may cause a little excessive wear. Clean the airfilter, new plug, tire pressure may help. It may just be a slow one. When they come in new, you could have a dozen of them lined up. ONE is going to be super quick, one is always a turd. Its just the way it happens. If you got a slow one, then a stage 1 or 2 will make a HUGE difference.

It doesn't sound like anything is wrong with your scooter, its just stock and slow. Give it a tune up, and see what happens.

Just a couple of thoughts. Was the person you bought it from big?
Maybe the belt is just worn a bit. Also, check if the exhaust is is tight
on the head. A leak might slow you down if it's big enough. Does the
scoot sound loud?

The person was a small guy, however, the bike was not in the best cosmetical condition, leading me to believe that it was abused quite nicely.

I checked the belt today, and it appeared to be in perfect condition. I will check the filter and spark plug tomorrow and see how those are. I pulled the exhaust off and re-attatched it, so I know that the bolts are nice and snug as well.

I think that I may start thinking about a Stage 1 because it's pretty cheap - but I'll see how it goes... Thanks, and any other thoughts or suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Stage 1 on a Vino is very quick! I bought my wife an 02 with 2000 miles of wear and tear, put stage 1, and a new belt, cleaned the airfilter, new spark plug, and it feels like a new bike. Except much faster! Vinos are so small, and light, that I would say a well tuned stage 1 is all you would ever want. Anything much more is too much for those small tires, and drums brakes.
