View Full Version : Real world top speed?
I'm considering purchasing an ls49 for my daily commute, especially since parking at school sucks but there's always mc parking open right next to the campus... The only thing that's really holding me back is how fast it will be able to go. The speed limit on most of the road is 45, though traffic moves a bit faster. I didn't think it would be able to keep up, but just the other day I saw a kymco cobra (which as I understand it is heavier?) that seemed to have no trouble. There is ample room for passing, but I'd still like to at least be close to the speed limit. TN'Gs website claims 45mph, what does it end up really being?
Oh, I almost forgot, is 1600 out the door a good price for a new 2004?

I believe the zuma is probably up in the top end (stock) speed wise for the 50cc range... It'll do 42-43mph stock.. However factor in wind and hills then you could be down to 35ish...
If you wanting to get to the 45 range go for a bigger engine... Case and point and I'm only in the 50's range with over $1000 in after market parts on my zuma...
so... Spend $1600 and hit VERY TOP 43mph.... or go with a 100 or 150cc and spend the money upfront and still have a warrenty that is usable...
Just myt 2 pennies anyway...
Then again if your a motorhead... like me.... then you'll enjoy upgrading and tuning the 50cc bike.... I'm hoping for 65 in the end... (have a few parts on order and haven't arrived yet....)

That's part of the problem... Ever since I started messing with my car bad things have happened. It nearly left me stranded a few weeks ago with a broken shifter cable. So I want something with a warrenty now (not my motivation for a two wheeled toy, just why I switched from a used bike to a new scoot).

Jered how are you only hitting 50's with all those upgrades? do those upgrades really not help much?

You know... It pulls nice and all but my top speed just isn't there... I've played and played with it and it isn't going to go any faster....
Don't plan on stage 1-3 going any faster than 50 maybe 55 max...
I've got more coming and hope for a higher top end but.... $1000 later (less stuff I'm waiting on, upgears and rubber) I increased my speed less than 10 mph....
Ho hum...

I should add that I have other parts coming (that are included in the dollar amount above)...
They hopefully will push teh bike over 60MPH.... If a CDI unit becomes available, then I will get that as well and see what she can do...
I've read the old zuma when modded will rev at 10500 RPM's and supposedly the bug eyes have a limiter at 9000rpm... or something like that...

You should talk to Larry Anderson, he has one and loves it.

I am currently working on getting the top speed out of those bug-eyes. I agree with the rev limiter, but it will take a little time to iron out a solution.
As for the LS49, they are great bikes. The local shop has sold a lot of them with very few issues. Top speed is about 40-45 depending.

How would I get ahold of him?

Just PM him, here's on the board.

Thanks, I didn't see his name on the list the first time I looked through it.

buy a vento r3i. i weigh 210 and am getting 50mph with just exhaust. so far from what i have seen that is great for only spending $1500 for bike, pipe, and shipping. so far the only draw back is trying to figure out which weights to use.

Nice - but hows the acceleration?

Great! Now where can I find a nearby dealer...
There's two TNG dealers each a half hour away.
[edit] Wow vento actually has a website now... No nearby dealers though... I'll think about it.

I love my TNG venice, but if you want something that will do 50 mph from the factory, I'd have to recommend the Derbi GP1. My mother-in-law has one and for what you pay, the quality is much better, not to mention liquid cooling, and it's still a 50cc. If derbi made a classic style body, I'd have bought one, but why would piaggio make an affordable vespa?

I personally love the Aprilia SR50 for sport scootering.
My wife's is the '02, mines the '01. Top speed depends on the day you ask.
Today was 78 degrees and sunny and mine did 45 all day. Most days I'll
reach 40-43 on level ground and I can count on 40mph every day. I don't
know if it's the temperature, humidity, air density or all three that affect the
top speed but they definatly have a preference.

the acceleration isnt to bad, i am still messing with the weights to get it better. i live in oklahoma and bought mine from (NO WEB LINKS ALLOWED) in florida and the shipping only took 3 days. the best thing to do though is buy from them on ebay, the price they listed on there was cheaper than there website so it save me a little so i could get the exhaust. best thing, they gave me my helmet for free.
