Remember Safety When Riding

I just got word that one of our younger riders in our scooter club was killed today when he lost control of his Kymco Cobra and struck a Dodge minivan. He was 17, and wasn't wearing his helmet. Apparently he took a corner too fast at an intersection and torpedoed the van. The police crime scene investigator had concluded Jason was traveling trough the corner at or about 28-31 mph range. He died of severe head trauma and from I was told by the officer, a friend of mine who responded to the call, "his head was crushed in like a beer can." He was cited three times this year for not wearing his helmet by the same PFC who responded to the 911 call for the accident. Remember helmets save lives.

Here's an update on Jason's death.
His parents are suing the driver of the minivan for having not reacting quick enough to their child's actions. They are suing the state for not having revoked his license or enforcing the helmet law. They are looking to sue YMC dealer that sold the Kymco for not creating a safer scooter. The trial lawyer is asking for ten million in compensatory and punitive damages, and another five hundred thousand for funeral and medical.
All this despite that the accident scene investigator concluded that, the Jason was at full fault, for speeding, crossing center line, and not wearing his helmet. The minivan driver was found at no fault. She was stopped at the time.
Love them lawyer, we're in a country completely devoid of personal responsibility. I'm sure glad I don't carry a shield these days,

Sucks about Jason.
I don't see this as an "accident" scene but a suicide- what did he think was going to happen riding reckless without a helmet. He did it to himself.
I hope his parents not only lose the case but the defendants counter-sue to recoup the legal costs, lost time and deflaming their product calling it unsafe and whatever else they can get!
KV- Talking to you on these forums I wish you still had your badge bro- have more common sense then most people I deal with.

You know it kind of gets to you. Dying for no reason. You know dying, while fighting for your country, to protect the and serve, putting out a fire, or rescuing the injured, is one thing, but to die over a damn scooter. I know I like my cycles, but to get killed over it boggles the mind.

But you know in your case Snyeed, you're on a F12, so it actually looks really cool on the sport scooters. I think the helmet stigma pertains more to Harley riders where the crotch rockeets will spend a grand easily on a helmet with a custom paint to match their cycle.

That is very unfortunate for that kid. I think that dying for any pre-mature reason is not something i would like to participate in.
I hope that this is a lesson to all of us who ride like we're invincible. Not wearing a helmet is not a good idea, but wreckless riding is just stupid. Know your limits and do not cross them.

85% of all motorcycle fatalities would have been prevented with use of a helmet. And as an ex-cop who has responded to more motorcycle accidents in five years than everyone on this board combined can claim to have witnessed, I fully agree with that figure. The accident that took me off the force would have been fatal if not for a helmet when my cycle hit a car broadside at 65mph.
