What exactly does a vented tranny cover help? I've seen it on a few scoots in the garage...any answers would be greatly appreciated!!

it cools down the area inside the tranny. meaning less heat effected roller wear, less spring wear related to heat, and also keeps the motor cooler as it disappates heat from teh cylinder.
FOr me drilling holes alone wasnt enough. As soon as I made a vent in front of the vario, i could finally feel air pushing out the tranny holes. I basically vented like the aftermarket covers and how many racers do.

it helps cool the tranny parts off... If you have ever touched the tranny after use, you will notice it's hot as heck...
venting it will allow air to flow through there and keep the parts cooler, making them last longer (IMO)

It would save your rollers from needing replacing so often.

it SHOULD make the belt last longers, as well as rollers.. due to allowing some cooling of the tranny parts... where the stock way is "sealed" and when it's hot, it's hot...

I was planning on drilling and grinding this weekend. Does water affect the tranny?
BTW I have about 5oo+ mi on my first set of rollers, lately my scoot is a bit sluggish, ie won't hit the powerband immediately. Does that sound like rollers or clutch adjustment (Delta). What weight rollers would you suggest 200+lbs?
Sorry 'bout the hijack

Never had issues with mine... Just don't drill on the top surface so water doesn't run in as easy while parked... Or the front face so it's harder to splash in while riding...

Would it be better if you colonise the drilled holes like five or six next to each other and apply an improvised air scoop so you can direct the air directly to the inside of the tranny just my thinking.... and an outport like five or six as well.. scoop will conseal the holes but will give a good air flow inside the tranny...

what works the absolute best is to cut a hole infront of the vario fan. I had bunches of holes but as soon as i vented a large cutout in front of the vario, there was air pushing out the holes.

But water can easily get inside it. What do you think?

why would i ride in the rain? LOL
But to the point, you dont care when the belts under the hood of your car get wet do you? Exact same situation. Theres more than enough friction to dry it off on contact. Now I wouldnt let it stay wet (any holes in the cover will let in water!) bc the crank will start to rust.

yup why scoot in rain. but the transmission is diff in cars. you are talking about fan belt not transmission belt right?

And fan belt is driven by the crack shaft I guess, connected to pistons and drives the propeller and fan to cool the radiator and run the aircondition compressor and run your alternator with a belt. not related to car transmission totally diff to scoot right?

So holes in tranny are ok and it is ok if the tranny gets wet and don't worry about it as what is summarized by Str8dum. right? But he recommend not to let it stay wet? How? probably taking the cover out taking the variator out and clutch and bad it dry and put it back again? I don't know. I am totally new...

lol, out here we always get cought in the rain no matter what and nothing happens to our bikes. most of the honda guys dont even use the rear parts of the tranny cover. the only problem that i have ever seen was guys blowing belts, never seen any problems from the rain or dust getting into the tranny.

Just thinking about this reply so I was talking to my self. With an open tranny. Good point jared. At least ur one guy who rides even if it rains and prove nothing is going to happen with an vented tranny. No belt slip? Right?
