Im looking for a quick and reliable scooter for college.
Im hoping it will last me for the 4 years Ill be in college...think the r3i will last me 4 years?
I dont plan on modding it or anything but I have a few questions...
1) Think it will last me 4 years without beating it up too much?
2) Is it one of the quicker scooters in its price range?
3) If I layed it down, how well will it hold up?
4) Any known common problems?

if you leave it stock, they are very reliable. It will ast a long time with general maintenance. If you can go 4 yrs at college without it getting stolen, well thats another issue.

yeah they are pretty reliable if you leave it stock, i would suggest upgrading to a Stage one with a Mallosi white spring and it should be fast enough, if laid down they do hold up pretty well, I broke a mirror and body pannel and that was laying it down twice! on different sides (one time i was stupid and popped a wheelie at my Shop just showing off had the bike for 2 days, the other time it was super wet roads and cement road surface, might as well been ice)

Hmmm I just got an offer for a brand new Tank 50QT-9 for like $900-1000...
Anyone know where I can get some good reviews on these? I searched the site and not much came up...anyone know anything about em?

But you think I should get it over the zip? Only things I dont like is that the warranty is only 6 mos on engine and 3 mos on some electric parts. It also only goes to 35 mph but it is only like $950...
Im looking for a reliable scooter and I dont think this one will cut it but maybe it will?
Comments?

If you cant find anything about them, isnt that a sign not to buy one? I mean when something does go wrong what are you going to do then. I'd only buy from yamaha, honda, aprilia, or vento.

i used to own a zip... it was a fun little scooter in my town over summer, but once all the college kids came back for school, it was a different story. it wasnt fast enough to hold it's own on streets outside of campus, and so i decided to tune it up. a stage one kit would be easy to add on and give a good improvement in performance. i went with a stage 2 kit and loved it. then my scooter was stolen (get insurance, even if you dont technically "need" it). i moved up to a motorcycle and i sold that recently and im going back to a scooter. why? cause scooting is fun.
so a zip is good. the price on a zip is good. but i thought it needed upgrades to be a city scooter and not just a campus scooter.
and tank's have a lot of quality control issues from what i hear, some people are happy with theirs, others arent so much. so thats up to you.

as for the zip stock, during breakin i had trouble reaching 40ish, but once broken in, i could reach about 45 on flat roads, and close to 50 downhill. the only problem was the acceleration. it was hard to keep up with traffic because it accelerated much slower, but once it got up to speed i was fine. my biggest complaint about the scooter was the acceleration... but i guess it depends on what you want to use it for.

Yea I probably wont get a Tank then.
But are zips acceleration that slow? Can anyone give me some numbers on it? I thought I read somewhere that zips accel pretty fast...maybe thats just compared to other scoots tho.
But you think a stock zip will be fine for going around campus or in 25 mph zones (the only speed limit in my small town :D )?

I've never had any problems with accel on a zip stock or modded. Stock they will pull from a Triton any day and modded even more because they use a smaller tire and are nice and light for those quick little stoplight races. lol :jesta:

to be fair, i think my zip wasn't tuned in the first place. im about a mile above sea level and i dont think my dealer did much to tune my carb. i had takeoff problems as a result once my auto-choke went off. it was sad. but as long as its tuned right, it'd be perfect for a campus cruiser and for slower streets. sorry i forgot to mention that before.

I acutully drive a BMK Jazz same thing as a Vento Zip R3i except it has a different body but same frame and motor and everything else. I got a stroker motor in it so its 100cc instead of 50cc. I put some polini parts on it and put a yasuni exsaust on it. It has a top speed of 70-75 mph. I put it on the dyno and it came out as 24 HP. Its still nice if its stock Theres a cover I took off that was around my knees so I have plenty of room now. I actully took the alarm off because it would go off randomly and got annoying and I took the electric start off of mine. Its a great scooter and I never had any problems. There 12 inch wheels. When its stock you can get going 40 but may be alittle faster because I'm 6'1" 270 pounds.

sell that yasuni and get a pipe matched for a 100cc motor and you'll prolly pick up another couple HP.

zip is a good choice for a commuting scooter, no problem reaching 25mph, 50mph top deristricted and stock acceleration is decent.

I was thinking of replacing the exahst. Its starting to rust from hitting bottom on the curb of my driveway and I drive to moped everyday. Thanks for the tip.
