Hey guys, I'm new here and I need some help! I have a 2005 stock Zuma and my brother has a 2004 Zuma, which is kicking my butt! As far as top end speed goes we are about even, but when climbing little hills my scooter seems to lack the power. It will hit the power band, but only to bogg down a little while after. It runs like a champ right out of the garage, but after running it for awhile it seems to be boggy. It is a stock scooter, just like my brothers, but his has more power for climbing. What needs corrected or is this just normal with others?

how many miles they have, IE: belt wear, roller wear...
what do you weigh compaired to him...
what are the other factors?
In addition, many scooters (identical models) have a top end variance of none to 5 mph difference... he could have a fast one, and you got a slow one...

just turned a 1000 miles, and a new belt was put on by dealer last fall because of a warrenty problem. I want to have the bottom end power like he does. We are both the same weight. I stuck my finger in the exhaust outlet, and it was covered with really black sticky crap, does this mean it is running rich or is that somewhat normal. His Zuma has about 1700 miles on it. What would be causeing the bogging problem when it has run for awhile?

Its probably getting warm, and a little lean. Exhaust goo is normal. You could get lighter rollers, or better clutch springs. Other than you're getting beat by your pal, you scooter sounds like its running normal for a stock scooter. You're not alone, which is why this sight sells go-fast parts for the zuma. How bad do you want to beat him? Stock for stock, they all run a little different, but generally run well. Just slow.....

I checked my sparkplug and the color was a light gray with just a hint of brown, so that tells me it is not running rich or lean. would a exhaust pipe help in the power band for climbing hills?

the other Zuma (which is outclimbing me) sparkplug is a nice black color. would this also be a difference?

If there's any grey or white your lean.

if it is lean then, why would it seem to be boggy?

You could raise your needle one notch, that would give you a little extra fuel. Black is not what you want. You'll end up walking home sooner or later. A pipe would help, so would a few other parts. How much do you want to spend...Stage 2 is the basic hot rod kit. But stage one would get you ahead of your pals scoot. Even if you put a pipe on, you're going to need to re-jet, re-roller, re-clutch spring.

cant i just put a pipe on and leave everything else stock?

a pipe would be good for the top end, but not the low. Just put stage 1 on my 05 zuma. Started with the pipe first and it was alot slower in accelerating. Soon as I put on the new variator and clutch springs it picked up the bottom end in a big way. Top speed now is about 45-46

No. If you just put a pipe on, and did not re-jet, you run the risk of burning the motor up because of it being lean. If you want more power, you need more fuel. The pipe will also change where your scooter makes its power, the clutch springs will let the motor rev up and engage where the power is. Without clutch springs, it will be a turd until it gets the rpm's up.

I just want to slap the new exhaust on, and ride... will I gain anything?

Yes, you'll learn how to replace a cylinder.
