The gas cap just broke apart, and a Yamaha dealer lists it at $55.44!
That's almost as much as two new tires.

As soon as we can get it to come off the tank, I'll see if it's
repairable. In the meantime, is it a generic cap? Easy to find cheaper
from another bike?

thx

I will check with OilyHans Harry to see if a TNG gas cap might work for the Vino.

mine came apart and parts fell into the tank. I bought one of those push button arms that grabs stuff and fished most of the parts out. It doesnt sprint open like before but still works.

Did you lose all the parts? When i was looking for a new cap, nothing fit but a zumas. maybe that other one will fit. I was lucky i coudl put it mostly back together.

Thanks all.

I tried searching for -gas cap- and the search engine came back
with:
"Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms.

The following words are either very common, too long, or too short and were not included in your search : gas, cap"

Turns out no three letter word works.

The problem with a used one is that it will be keyed differently

But,there is a better solution - get one from a Zuma. It doesn't lock and should be more plentiful.
I have a Vino and a Zuma - I checked for you and the cap fits perfectly.

Excellent, thanks scooter.

Stepvino,
a locking cap w/keys from a venice should work ,they would be about 19$ plus shipping to you. a non locking cap would run you $9 plus shipping

By the way, the TNG/QJ cap does indeed fit the Vino, but I'd still look for a Zuma one.

Thanks all. Had missed these replies.
Will be checking out what's left of the cap tomorrow, after the front wheel
goes back on. TNG it is, maybe the key lock can be swapped out.

"maybe the key lock can be swapped out."

No, it can't.
They will both fit the tank but are completely different.

So what year TNG and Zuma should I get a gas cap for to replace my Vino one? Or does the year not matter with gas caps?

StepVino

Not sure what year TNG, but the part number is
in the attached picture. All parts look identical.

I have both bikes.
Your "spend a week figuring out how to swap locks" plan won't work.

Just get a Zuma one.

Hey scooter, the TNG looks exactly the same. Why don't you think
it wouldn't work?

I'm sure you can find a way to spend a week or two and a few hundred dollars trying to find a way to work on it, but the fundamental reason is that they are just plain different.

They both fit the same gas tank but that's their only similarity.

If you don't need a key-locking one just buy a Zuma one and move on with your life.

I went ahead and ordered the TNG gas cap. You sound like you know
what you're talking about, but at $14.99 for the Venice, vs $54 for the stock
one, I have to see what the difference is for myself. Scoot isn't going
anywhere for at least another week anyway.

Hopefully you'll prove me wrong and we'll both learn something new.

I wonder what happened with the gas cap re-keying project.

Turned out gas cap fits just fine. Took them both apart, and got stuck
on some unknown trick to get the actual tumbler out. I remember
noticing that the Venice cap wasn't quite as good quality as the
stock. Functionally, it's perfect though... almost. The arrow on the
cap points 180 degrees off. It was an easy job to turn it around.

I know the caps fit - I had posted that a few times.

Were you successful in changing the lock assembly so the Yamaha key works in the Chinese cap?

StepVino

Nope, couldn't figure out how the tumbler comes out.

I bought my vino scoot as a theft recovery and needed all the locks replaced, bought the factory ignition and seat lock, both came with different keys and a used cap from a Jog. I re-keyed my seat and gas tank locks to match the ignition key. I spent about 3 hours modifying and installing new locks but I am a handy guy. Its been a long time since I did the mod, the gas cap has 2 screws on the bottom and then a "C" clip or two to get the tumbler to come out and then I mixed and filed the "pins" to match the key.

Nice one. Right now I'm into other projects on the scoot,
but will get back to changing the gas cap tumbler.
