View Full Version : Replaced belt on my GT5 today.

I rode my GT5 Triton on a 60 mile round trip last night. The weather was in the 60F to 70F range. I notice that my top speed was down (level ground) to about 47 to 48 mph tops. My acceleration and hill climbing also seemed down a bit. I had just checked my plug and it was a nice chocolate color and seemed dry. A while back I had tried to order a belt from Eric and was told that he was having trouble getting that belt. Some one else on the forum said the belt was the same size as the Vino so I ordered that one. I decided to pull the cover today and clean out the dust that I new was in there. Man was it in there. Nearly all black. I did a good thorough clean up and even clean the pulley surfaces with a Scotch brite pad. I found that the stock belt was the bando brand like Erich sells and when I compared the two they were real close to the same. Now the old belt didn't seem worn but all that dust came from somewhere. The pulley surfaces had a good deal of build up in the form of rings. They seemed to clean up real nice with the abrasive pad. After reassembly I took it for a ride and seemed at first to be getting a lot of rpm flutuation but that seemed to settle down after a few miles. I noticed that my midrange bog seemed to almost disappear and the acceleration was much improved. Now the weird word is that I was hitting 54 to 55 on the flat and got up to 58 down a few hills. I know this will change as the new belt wears in but it seems like a lot of wear for only about 2500 miles and like I said the belt did not look bad. I am almost tempted to reinstall the old belt just to see if it is worn that much or if it was the dust and rubber build up causing my problem. I will definitely be pulling the cover again soon to check on the dust situation. I know that after I put a new belt on my Zuma there has been no more dust or problems. ::handleba

Yeap Build up like you said can be real sticky and make things such as
VARIATORS, can lead to Slow Open, & Close

You really have to keep that trans clean A lot but difficult to remove all those screws and then open the cover. you almost have to Clean it every few months, what you may need is a air filter on your Cover intake port, for the Dust,

Those are the Flaws of Rubber Belts ' you clean it and it will run Great but after a few weeks it's back to Sticky operation,Slow engage,Sluglish

I totally agree however it seems my Zuma has remained very clean after the new belt an I have 2400 miles on the new belt (about 4700 miles total mileage).
I pretty much have it down to a few minutes on removing the Vento cover but the Zuma with its hex head bolts and having to remove the kick lever takes a little more time.
