Hi everyone I have a question today I bought a 2002 model Zuma It has some parts on it like pipe clutch contra spring I bought it for $500 But its preety beat up. When I get home try to start it I put a 17.5 Derbi carb on turn it over with a kick start and it wont fire I try putting mix fuel in the carb and after I kick it a couple times I take out the spark plug and its wet. I think its lost spark for some reason because I tryied lean it against the cylinder and turn it over but NO SPARK. The zuma has 18,672 miles. Any suggestions what I should try first?:

make sure your cdi wire's are hooked up.

wow... Okay there are several places to look for a problem...

Here are some wiring diagrams... The CDI could be unhooked, the coil could be unhooked, switch wiring could be screwed up and need to be played with...

An example, if there is a malossi cdi unit on it that wasn't wired properly, then it will only fire with the key "off" or key "on" and thumb switch "off"... I know this sounds weird but when you have a used scooter with mods, WHO KNOWS WHAT THEY COULD HAVE DONE!

The pics below will show what you can check for electrical problems as well as where they are located on the scooter.

I'd look at CDI, coil, ignition switch first... Then if no luck you might have a problem with the mageto and stuff under the cooling fan... be careful down there as it's easy to screw something up!

here is a pic of the generator and assembly if you need to go there!

It Started after I got done messing with it it started in the off position what can it bee. And listen to this guys I took the polini racepipe and put it on my stock zumaasnd it wouldnt go past 20mph why is that??? I put the stock pipe back and its doing 38mph. What can be the broblem. Also ran in to a problem on the carb the moddified one it will only idle if I open the throthe it bogs not even giving it a chance to pick up speed Another main jet? ? Or neddle position?
Im premixing

okay with it starting in the off position... 2 things come to mind... 1st it's got an after market CDI unit... Unless it is wired through a relay as stated in my post on the Malossi CDI install... Then it will only start when the scooter is in the "off" position...

2nd, it's possible that it is a theft recovery scooter (you said it's pretty rough) so highly possible... Definately worth looking at the wiring! If something is wired goofy due to hot wiring, or back yard mechanics repairs... Then you might be best off trying to get a new wiring harness...

The part about the pipe on your other scooter... When you install a different pipe on the scooter (stock one), then your changing the compression, back pressure, basically on a 2 stroke engine... The exhaust is a MAJOR component on tuning the scooter...

Okay, if you change the exhaust... More than likely your going to need to change your rollers as well as tuning the carb...

DO NOT TRY TO JUST INSTALL A PIPE... It's not friendly with the stock engine... As provo sells stage kits... That is how the parts should be installed!

As for the 02 scooter... with you saying that the scooter bogs when anything above idle... Mine did this when I broke my jet and started it... It'd idle great... But if you applied any amount of throttle... It would die or try to... Basically was being flooded... Might try that 1st... 2nd... Try making sure that your transmission is all correctly installed... If the roller weights, clutch springs, torque spring are messed up, it will cause the rear wheel to enguage before your into a powerband... causing it to feel like the engine is bogging (which it is...) also feels like the carb could be tuned incorrectly... Believe it or not... It could be the tranny needs tuning... If it all looks good... Try lighter weighted rollers...

Hope this helps... Wanna give up... let me know.... I'll take it and fix it... Bad thing shipping will kill me... hahaha!

That really help jered thanks for taking your time and helping me out. I have some jets that the guy gave me with the carb I will try to change the main get and adjust the carb . Will let you know what is up

The problem with the bogging was the aftermarket air filter I took the stock air box off my zuma and installed it and the top end screamed. I want to see how fast it will go. It goes to 40 and stays there I think the top speed is about 55mph I want to register this zuma and ride it. I just need to get the jetting right not to fry the piston. And one more question When premixing how many lines has to go into the carb? Only the gas line? there is like 2 more lines that are in the carb how does the premixing goes im to sure.

well, here is the tricky part of pre mixing. one line is for oil. one is for gas. The third one is a vacuum actuated fuel valve. so unless you switch to a manuel fuel valve you need at least two lines.

changeing the filter and getting better results tells me that you were running lean. better adjust your jetting.

there are 3 tubes coming to the carb...

The big one is the fuel line... The middle one (if you want to call it that, on th ecarb) is the vaccume line, the furthest from the fuel line on the carb is the injector line... If you take it off, make sure you cap that line!

Lennox, what ratio did we decide needs to be ran on our scooters with a PRE-mix only set up?

I got this cool premix guage yesterday and want to try it out... basically a sealed ended funnel and then you pour in the oil till the ratio line/fuel amount mark is hit... Will then fill a plastic bottle and carry it with me on the scooter... :D

about 40:1. this ratio is working great for me.

So what you guys are sayng bassicaly I need to run the main fuel line clog the injector line with a nail or something and run the vent line.

no, you need the main line to be pluged in, as well as the vaccume line...

No nails... The carbs come with little rubber caps... that's best... if you don't have one... Get one... I'd imagine that an electronics or maybe a auto parts store will have them... But DON'T JAM A NAIL INTO IT!

Last resort, take a thick piece of plastic and rubber band it on, or Zip tie it on...
