I have a 2003 Zuma stock with the windshield. First I must say great site, and what a terrific little scooter. I purchased the scooter new in 2003 and have put 4800 trouble free miles on the scoot. Compared to my old Honda Spree scooter this is 10 times better in every way.
About 500 miles ago it developed a midrange bogging issue. It takes off well then at about 10-25 mph it really struggles. Then it hits the top end and runs really strog from 25-40. I downloaded the manual (thanks Provoscoot) and they recommend to clean out the clogged exhaust pipe? Anyone ever had this problem? How do I clean the pipe or do you even think that is the problem?
Thanks in advance. Paul

i agree with lennox...
check your rollers and your belt... i'd imagine after 5000 miles, they need replacing..

Cleaning the pipe is easy. Remove the two cylinder flange bolts and two mounting bolts. Take the pipe and throw it in a dumpster. Works every time.

Are the roller weights easy to change? How about the belt?
Yamaha parts or aftermarket?
Also, another Q about the exhaust. If my motor makes 6hp stock how much of a gain could I expect with a aftermarket exhaust? Wouldnt I have to get a bigger carb to see any significant improvement?
Thanks for the info............... o_o

6 hp, who said the stock zuma had 6 hp? I'm guessing more like 3 at the wheel. But, you will see much improvement from a pipe. I liked it so much I didn't even need more speed. A carb won't help you without a cylinder.

If you think your pipe is full of carbon and your roller weights are shot go with a stage I kit, pipe and variator and buy a belt while you're going to be in there. Go through the how tos and do it your self. Stage I is a very easy DIY. If you don't want to do that they're practically giving away stock pipes on e bay. o_o

yeah, stock pipes for under $50... the stage one would give about 5 mph more on the top end and is pretty easy to tune in... and not that expensive...
It'd cost more to have a radiator shop clean your muffler out via bathing it then it's worth IMO...

If you're going to stay with a stock pipe make sure your using good oil. Cheep oil dosn't burn as clean as good fossil oil or synthetic, resulting in more carbon build up.

2-S is a synthetic blend, and is excellent oil. The Yamaha guys here swear that using it, the rest of the scooter will rust away before the engine fails. I believe them.
