I never used to and I swore I never would. But it's so tempting when all these people are clogging up my city trying to avoid the freeway. ;)

NOpE! and that is extremely dangerous... I was in california, heading to disney land and saw a guy doing this on a motorcycle... He was probably going over 50mph in traffic that was crawling, 5mph or so...
Sure as could be a guy was changing lanes a few car in front of us and the guy hit the car... Flew off the bike and his bike went end over end trashing cars!
Hrm.... wasn't his best day.... Or brightest decision....
Now I know that is an extreme... but crap happens... ya know!

55 mph close to cars is a little crazy. If that guy didn't wreck then, he would have by now. I'm talking about stop lights and I'm in first gear at least giving myself enough time to react. But I know it's risky...I only do it if there's more than 10 cars or so and they're all stopped. If traffic is moving, I stay put.

Lane splitting is illegal in many states and the few states that it is legal in such as CA has been debating banning it as a result of several high profile accidents in recent years. Persoanlly, with how east coast drivers are, I wouldn't lane split in a millon years, then you get palces like Mass where the damn cars lane split.

Anyways, back to the topic. It's perfectly fine to split traffic in the context that you put. City traffic splitting is harmless! As you said, as long as your at a stop light though. I've been doin it for months now, with a tiny vino to the beastly mojito... and have never had a problem. You just gotta look out for youself, make sure you fit through and take your time.

Well, considering i drive a moped, no turn signals, and 1.5 horses... if traffic is stopped... im on the shoulder passing. It's just how it happens. Plus the moped only goes 25mph, and the law states i have to stay on the shoulder if it is over a 25mph Zone. But if there's a sign, or a light, i fly right up the right side and do my thing. No harm, no foul.

Mass law is stricter than Maryland's. Personally, I'd never think of splitting in the city. Lord forbid you're between lanes and the guy beside you swerves cause a kid pops out in to the street or a car door opens from a parked car, cause you're boned.

Maryland drivers...
I HATE lane splitters and have throw coffee out my window at the "right moment" a few times...
Had to mace one guy so that made it even funnier...

Lane-splitting is not worth it. I love my life way to much and am willing to be a little patient to where I am going. :) ;)

Well for starters a 13 year old has no business riding a scooter, yet alone lane splitting at 40mph.

I have never personally split lanes, nor do I condone it where it is illegal... but I would never try to harm someone to teach them a lesson. We always hear those stories about people opening car doors, throwing coffee and spraying mace, with obvious malicious intent. This obviously does not solve anything... when someone gets hurt it will make traffic much worse. Does it really bother you that much that someone is getting through faster that you? Lets leave the law enforcement to the boys in blue.

I'm glad I didn't have many lane splitters when I wore the uniform, but then again with how VA drivers and DC drivers were no one was crazy enough to try and lane split. (Except for the bike patrol)
