View Full Version : Oil from exhaust

Black sludgy stuff slowly collects on of the end of my exhaust pipe and I wipe it off every month or so. Is that normal with a 2-stroke?

Also, after a good stretch at 30+mph and I pull up to a stop, I sometimes smell burning oil and wondered if that was my engine. Or is it just that sludge in the tailpipe getting hot?

I'm all stock, dereg'd, with about 900 miles on the engine. I've only recently been running it up to high rpms.

Some reassuring words from the 2-stroke experts would be appreciated.

My weedeater does the same thing. Chainsaw and scooter also. Its the world of the 2 smoker. If you have a chrome pipe, it REALLY looks bad.

OK. Thanks all, that's pretty much what I suspected.

Does the crud ever clog up the pipe, or does it pretty much get blown out the end?

If there any baffles inside those will get oil caked, but Ive never heard of a pipe clogging...the scooter will barely run before that happens.Pdxjim...If our pipes got hotter more crud would burn up..but that doesnt happen as fast as the buildup...so..Crud.

Thats why synthetic oils are better. They burn cleaner and reduce the carbon buildup in both the exhaust and piston.

Older stock mopeds and scooters do clog. I've replaced many (drilled a few). Its just the nature of the beast. The exhaust ports will clog, and acutally glaze over. The rings will polish it, and it will look like metal. You won't have to worry, it takes many many years for this to happen.

I'm already using synthetic Motul 600, so I won't worry about it.

If you are running too rich it will probably build up faster because the exhaust isn't getting as hot as it would if you were more lean. Might be something to check into.
