A couple of weeks ago i was caught by a bike cop riding my zuma without glasses.. he gave me a fine for the eye protection, and then told me that i needed a motorcyle endorsement to ride this bike.. Everyone that i have talked to said that its a 49 cc bike and that if it is under 50 cc that a license isnt required.. im going to court to fight this fine , does anybody have any info to help me win? I still think that you dont need one, but he swears you do.. thanks

What state are you in?

it all depends on your local laws, Unfortunately you have no location listed in your post or on you public profile...

Let us know where your located and then maybe we can assist you in finding the info...

I know that the dealer where I bought my zuma from (2004) didn't even give me an option... it was automatically registered with the state as a motorcycle... So as far as not needing a license up here? I think if you live here and it has 2 wheels it needs plates and a motorcycle endorsement.

I know a bunch of states are different and don't require it with under 30mph, or 50cc, or other catches... but can't help since we don't know where you live...

Yeah, man - what state are you in? obviously from your post eye protection is required, but that still leaves like 35 or 36 states. And besides, you should think about getting that endorsement anyways - the stuff you'll learn will make you a better and smarter rider. then you can pop wheelies "safely" and do 45 in a 30 "safely" :D

All you need to ride a zuma is a driver id. and that is in 49 states if you dont have you license yet you need to get it when riding a newer zuma

There are quite a few states like CA and NY that require a motorcycle license to ride any 50cc scooters.

I'm licensed, and the dealer here asked to see my license before they sold and let me ride my scooter off...

Also, eye protection is not only required in most stated but it's just common sence!

What would a bee feel like in the eye at 35 mph... OUCH! In addition, sun glasses are not eye protection unless there is a "shatter resistant" label on them!

What would a bee at 35 or a pebble at 35 do to your eye? How about the same with shattered sun glasses on top of it!

no kidding! I think the mosquito's, flies, and bees are aiming at me when I ride. My goggs' are constantly being pelted with crap flying at me.

I can't imagine riding with eye protection! Thank goodness for my goggles, because I'd be sans and eye without 'em. ;) Then I'd have to get a parrot.

I wear sunglasses and even then sometimes something manages to sneak by them and get in my eye. I'm looking for some good goggles right now.

I got goggles on ebay... They are nothing special but theyt work great... cost me $10.00 for 3 pairs... shatter "proof" but who knows what proof really means!

Anyway, you can get them for cheap if you look a little...

Bugs in face is the one thing I don't miss when wearing a the full face helmet instead of the half face one. We had that cicada invasion this year, and those things at 40mph hurt like hell!

I think if your state requires a motorcycle license to ride a Zuma and he only nailed you for not wearing eye protection (which leads me to believe that you do not need a motorcycle endorsement to ride a scooter in your state in retrospect!) that you got off quite lucky! Operation of a motor a vehicle without a proper license and/or endorsement is taken as a pretty serious infraction and car leed a vehicle in most states to being impounded.

Ohio considers anything with moving pedals a moped. Everything else is a motorcycle, including our vino's. Also with that, you need a motorcycle endorsment, proof of insurance,etc...Jim

G-d forbid you have an at fault accident, or you get hit by another uninsured driver!

A lot of people mistakenly believe you don't need a license for a scooter/moped when in actuality you might, depending on the state where you live. I live in TX and you are required to register and license your scooter/moped even if it's only a 50cc engine, and you have to take the written portion of the motorcycle license test to get a moped/scooter license. Don't make assumptions and do the research yourself. You don't want to risk getting a ticket or worse. I'm even required to have proof of liability on my scooter! (I got more than liability, though, in case someone hits me, liability won't cover that and definitely won't pay for hospital bills, etc, especially if the person who hits me is an uninsured motorist!). Good luck!

Well said and with that, we'll bring to a close another licensing thread.
