James your CRAZY!

The weather has made the roads just wet... If I can ever figure the CDI relay out... I'll try her again and see how fast I can get the MONSTER to go... But I need to get it rolling soon... more snow is forcasted for Thursday night! GRRRRRR!!!

Here is a question for you electric guys!

The relay needed for the Malossi CDI unit is opposite of the standard relay you can get at radio shack...

here is what I need...

What is required is a relay that is closed when not powered and open when powered... meaning... I need the relay to ground when I shut the scooter off...

A normal relay Grounded when powered... I have tried to change the wires around and stuff but it doesn't make a difference... I need a different relay... I even got a 5 prong relay instead and though it would work but it's still set up to close the circuit when powered...

*** Electronics class 101**** when I am saying "CLOSE" this means that the circuit is powered and the current is flowing through the wire to the CDI...

When I say "OPEN" that means there is a "break" in the electric current... Litterally meaning and "open" in the wire... causing the power to not flow...

Just so no one is confused...

So if anyone knows where I can get one like this... please, please let me know... or even if you can get it and I paypal the money for it and shipping...

Thanks a million!

This is a pic of the wrong one... I need it opposite of this... If you can see the diagram on the side... the 30 and teh 57 need to be closed when off...

jered,
Sometimes auto parts stores will have relays like that near their fuses and stuff. You'll probably have to use a relay that has two contacts - a power circuit for closed and one for open and you'll just use the open side. While you're looking for this, maybe you can work on fixing a ski to the front wheel of your scooter for better mobility in the snow!

check to see if you have an electrical wholesale house in your area, than
check to see if they have square D ice cube relays. they make 12v DC
relays, but their only 9 amps rated with n/o-n/c contacts.
I have them at my electrical wholesale house, but I cannot sell them out
of my area because of contracts with SQD. :(

I'll see if the one place in town I know of has them...

What's SQD?

sqd= square d

it is an electrical components maker.

Everyone is right, ther are plenty of relays that give you the choice. I have an extra here (although I have not tried it for the cdi yet)

you want me to try one first then mail you one? Or just mail it? lemme know.

by all means... if you have the opposite... please send me one.. i'll pay you for it and shipping via paypal or send it in the mail.... i'll pm you my address...

thanks...

unfortunately living in alaska has it's disadvantages with odd parts... there is only 1 supplier in town that has stuff like that and i got the dear in the headlight look...

what you need is a SPDT relay... and you want to use the 87A connector see attached photo, upper right hand side.

King Vino! How did you manage to do that!?!?!

XPS1210

okay... so here it is... Those with the malossi CDI unit! Here are the installation instructions!

So easy it was stupid! I finally had to open the relay and look at what went where and then it was so obvious I felt stupid!

here they are!

step 1, remove cover with headlights, there are 10mm bolts on the front of the scooter and 2 phillips screws on the black side above the ignition. Remove cover and unplug the 2 headlight wires.

Step 2, remove battery cover, seat, cover over cylinder, rear rack and the left side cover (all will come off with phillips screw driver, 10mm socket and a 5mm hex wrench).

Step 3, remove screw that holds stock cdi unit in place. Unplug the 4 wires from the stock cdi. plug wires into the new cdi unit (expect the black/white wire) , and mount on the screw where original cdi was.

Step 4, run a new wire from the black/white wire of the cdi to the ignition area. hook this wire to number 87A on the relay.

Step 5, splice wire into brown wire on ignition switch and connect to the number 86 on relay.

Step 6, unplug the black/white wire from the ignition switch and connect the switch wire to number 85 on relay.

Step 7, unscrew the the bolt that holds the horn on and hook a new wire to it as a ground wire, then tighten the bolt down. Run this wire to number 30 on the relay.

Step 8, start scooter to make sure it will run. Note, the new cdi will no longer all the thumb kill switch to work. The only way to kill the engine is by using the key!

Step 9, mount relay with a zip tie. Reinstall the headlight cover, remember to plug the headlights back in.

Step 10, reinstall the seat, cylinder cover, left side panel and rear rack.

That's it... I'll post pics as well... however I think it might be placed onto provoscooters how to... Let me find out first! Then I'll post all the pics if Erich would prefer that instead...

Finally, thanks for the help and your welcome for the instructions...

you didn't go the next page (3) anyway... that was a joke... but yes, we've already had 6 inches of snow! It's all melted now but the roads are ice when I go home from work... So the scooter riding is all during the day time.... No night riding anymore!
