Hey all....it's almost been a month and I'm still lovin my Zuma! I have a question about speed though. Throughout this site and many other sites, people refer to how fast their modified Zumas are - ie "55 mph". I'm wondering if part of the upgrade is a new speedometer because mine only goes up to 45 mph. Not at all an important question but....one that's got me wondering.. Thanks.

i do not post numbers from the speedo. Most people will give you GPS #'s. I have not seen any new speedos for the new Zuma, only the old ones.

there is only one speedo I have seen for the zuma... It is in Kilometers... Which makes for a headache for me on the milage issue...
In addition I'd have to convert the KPH/MPH.... I'll wait...

speedo's are almost always wrong or at best not as accurate as GPS.
I can say I am going 45 MPH by my speedo but in real life only doing 38 MPH- GPS is the cheapest way to find out "your 45" is really just 38.

I just bought my '05 zuma yesterday, the speedo goes up to 40 mph, it has the mph and the km on the speedometer. oddly enuf, I am only reaching speeds of 35 mph, not taking full advantage of the speedo, unless its down a big ***** hill, and it burries the needle, but that doesn't count for anything. If anyone can give me advice as to why my brand new scooter (with 36 miles on it now) only goes 35 mph, sometimes 36? I weigh 220lbs, and most of this is flat land.

there are supposedly 2 restrictors on the zuma (some say they are there others say that there are none)...
Maybe my dealer removed them?
anyway, there might be a cone in the exhaust... it'd be within the first inch or so right at where it connects to the exhaust port. Use a drill or a dremmel and carefully remove the cone welds...Be sure not to punch a hole into the side of the exhaust...
There also could be a washer on the inside of the finned pulley half on the variator side... That's the pulley by the front of the scooter... If you remove the finned pulley half and there is anything between the pulley, remove it... all that does is cause the belt to not ride the whole way up the variator face..
Let me know if they are there or not.. also what the new top speed is if you remove them...

thanks jered, I want to get my hands dirty tonight after work (technically friday) or first thing on saturday. I am going to borrow all the tools, see if i can buy a $20 drimmel from wal-m%%t and get dirty with it. My friend has tons of tools cause he's a mechanic, but fully admits to knowing nothing about tu-stroke engines :) at least he's honest. Your advice is greatly appreciated, hopefully that will raise my top speed, cause how annoying is it to get stuck at red lights and can't trigger them, only because you couldn't go fast enuf to escape the yellow light (saftely, i'm no dare devil), though I thought i was gonna lay down my zuma today when I took a sharp turn and ran into some dirt, i felt the bike slip, so I kicked my foot out and pushed her back up and kept on going, once again thanks jered!

I have been thinking about adding a bycycle speedo to mine. I think it should be very accurate. The one I have on my bycycle actually lets you measure the cercumference of the tire and program it into the computer. You then mount a magnetic pickup on the wheel and run a wire down the fork leg to the sensor. Top speed goes as high as the digits of the LCD readout allow. Mine has space for two whole numbers and tenths (00.0) so it will go up to 99.9 mph, although I have not had my bycycle that fast.
Has anyone tried one of these yet?

I have one of those on my bicycle that works fairly well. You can set it for any size wheel so it would work for what you are thinking about using it for, however- how accurate really is it?
I am not sure how accurate it really is- the only way to do that is use a GPS along with it... Then it comes down to if you have access to a GPS why not just use that......
My bicycle thing was a little over $50 for the wireless model- so for a bit more I can get a GPS.
I guess if you were looking to see how fast you were going all the time it would be worth it- to me I just want to be able to see what my mods did or didn't do and post "real" numbers on my top speeds and distance to get there.

I got a wired bike speedo and the damn thing couldn't use a tire size as small as the zuma... The smallest it would take was 100 diameter...

a tach (every modded scooter should have one) and knowing your gears, you can calc your speed at all times

okay FINE Lennox! I'll get a tach!
I really do need to get one... But the speed things are so much funner!

My numbers are per my GPS, it mounts to my handlebar and is battery operated

I may have to fiddle with mine to see how small of a tire I can program in. I don't think I have the manual anymore.
It should be fairly accurate if you can put in the actual tire size. Every time the wheel turns, the computer knows exactly how far you have traveled. Of course, tire wear will make a slight difference, but if you re-measure every few hundred miles you should be able to keep it accurate.
The one I have cost about 25 bucks if I remember correctly, and I have seen them cheaper.
Anyone have one of these and a GPS for some testing?
