2003 Vino

My new tires arrived and I am trying to remove the rear wheel.
I have removed the exaust and found that this puupy has already had the exaust derestricted. :ulp

I have removed the axel nut.
Now, How do I pull off the rear wheel assembly?
What's the trick?
I have looked in both the owners manual and the service manual and all I can find is if you get a flat or your tire is worn take it to the dealer.

Do I need a wheel puller or something?
I am not much of a mechanic and could use some help here.

Any help would be appreciated.

spray some "penetrating oil" or WD-40 on the axle, and maybe tap it with a wood hammer

Kuzz- just kind of shake & shimmy the wheel off the axel--it comes off pretty easily. Removing the axel nut was the hardest part, since it was on so tight.

All,

That rear wheel was on there. I used liquid wrench, shake and shimmy and was getting nowhere. More liquid wrench, more S&S, still nothing. I grabbed a piece of 4x4 and a hammer and would tap and rotate, tap and rotate and finally it came loose. I went to the other side and did more S&S and off it came. I am done for tonight and tomorrow will work on getting the front wheel off.
Anything I should know or any tips before before I start my journey?

Once again, All, I DIG YOU FOLKS for all your help. I LOVE this forum :o)

you have to remember that the wheels are also the drum for the brakes... so it's harder to put on and off then simply a rim...

Glad you got it off of there....

oh yeah... 87 Ft pounds for tightning the bolt...

The service manual calls for 75 Ft pounds rear & 35Ft pounds front.
And how do I get 75 Ft pounds? I got it off with a large cresent wrench. I don't think a torque wrench will go that high, will it?

What do I have to do take it to a tire shop to make sure I get the 75 Ft pounds with there impact wrench? If so I would have to load it up and take it in before I put the exaust back on. :o(

Thanks for you help,

Kuzz

there are torque wrenches that will go to thousands of ft pounds... at my work we have a pallet loader that carries 60,000 of cargo... and anyway the bolts on the axels are 900 ft/pounds... takes 2 people to make the stupid thing pop!

a cresent wrench, I stood on mine and bounced... to make sure it was tight.... I'd rather over tight... then not enough and it come off while riding!

Don't worry about taking it to a shop... you can do it... just make sure it's as tight as you can get it... 87 pounds is pretty tight!

Dig you for that.

White walls will be on soon. I have a small oval chrome rear rack, chrome shock and chrome heat shield coming soon as well as my brown floor mat. Got the eyelid / visor on. When I get her all dressed up I will post pics of my baby.

Where did you find whitewalls for a Vino?

Kuzz--looking forward to pix of your dolled up Vino.

After reading this, I wonder why my rear wheel was relatively easy to remove?
Honestly all I did was a slight shake & shimmy to get it off. Could it have been because a year and half earlier Yamaha had removed the wheels to change the tires and it was already loosened up?

The axel nut was really difficult, though, I had to borrow a large wheel type tire wrench from my neighbor that was large enough to fit the 22 mm nut to get it off. And then I didn't have the strength, had to ask my son to do it.

Kuzz- did you order the shock and heat shield from Simon 2001? I really dig that chrome heat shield.

Susan,

Yes, I ordered the small oval chrome rear rack, chrome heat shield, chrome shock and extension all from Simon. The brown mat and headlight visor from the Yamashop.

I went on Ebay and ran a search for headlight visors and blue dot. There are lots of neat accessories that will work for the vino and other scoots. They have eyelids / visors with blue dots, I saw some license plate brackets, bullet chrome with red, blue, purple and green blue dots and bullet chrome valve stem covers all in the same colors. No this is not PIMP MY SCOOTER LOL. You might want to check it out there is all kinds of stuff. I also got some cool goggles on ebay. Vented with foam, mirrored lens on the outside but on a clear lens. Works great for night riding. They were only 10 bucks. Today I hope get the front wheel off and get them to the shop to get the white walls mounted.

Thanks to Susan, Jrered, other members and Provoscoot for all the help, direction and answers to this newbees questions.

If you overstress it too much it may fail anyway. I am not sure about everyones scoots but mine has a fujilock nut on it. It is similar in design to a nylock except it is reusable. It has a metal ring in the top to do the locking. When in doubt use loctite. Better to do that than overtighten.

I work in the fastener industry and I have seen some pretty bad failures due to over tightening /overstessing. Remember the axel is a hardened piece and therefore any overstressing will be taken directly by the nut and nut alone.

I was able to borrow a torque wrench and set it to 75 Ft pounds. Both front (35) and rear (75) white walls are mounted and on the scoot. While I had the exaust off i cleaned it up with some solvent, let it sit for awhile and repainted it with high temp flat black paint. Now it's time to go flip it over and spray the other side. I got this in my head now. Before I hope on the scoot for a ride I will be checking both axle nuts. :spiny:
