View Full Version : roller weights question

so i installed stage one last night, haven't driven it a ton yet, but it seems to start off slow like everyone says it should, then accelerate faster, but it definitely doesn't "shoot from 5 or 7 up to 50" like others (and this site) say it will... it accelerates much faster up to around 40 or a bit less, then slowly works its way up to 47 or so, depending on hills and whatnot (i live in seattle, there aren't many long flat areas for me to test this out on)

my question is this, i put in the lightest roller weights that came in the variator kit, which i thought were the extra light ones i ordered for an extra 10 bucks, then i noticed an extra set of weights stuck in the bag with the pipe hardware, and thought, oh ****, THOSE are the extra light weights i should've used... should i swap them out? how much of a difference does it really make? and does it only effect the starting acceleration or does it effect the acceleration all the way to the top?

any help anyone can give me would be much appreciated, thanks.

oh and i do ride on a lot of hills, and weigh 185...

ps. one more question: on the site it says i should definitely replace my belt if i've got upwards of 1500-4000 miles.. i did order the kevlar belt, but it was on back order, i have 4000 miles on my bike and my stock belt looks good as new, what's up with that?

Try the other rollers. Also, the rollers that are in there right now may be ruined. I put them in and the next day the Vino wouldn't run right, so I looked inside the variator and the plastic casing was melted.

alright, i'm gonna take it for one more spin, then change the weights for the lighter ones and see how it compares...

The belt might look ok, but it's width might be reduced. At some point it will start to slip when you first take off because it wont engage the front pulley well.

yeah i just read that somewhere... well i'll be getting the kevlar belt in a week or so, according to erich. so i swapped out the roller weights for the lightest ones, i could hardly tell a difference in weight between the set erich sent for an extra 10 bones and the lightest set that came with the performance variator, but i switched it anyway cause i do ride on a LOT of hills... i couldnt tell any difference driving though, but oh well, the bike seems hits the power band at around 5mph, "shoots" (kinda) up to around 35, creeps up to 40, then slooooowly makes it's way to 47 or 50, hard to tell since the speedo only goes to 40... any suggestions on making it accelerate faster at those higher numbers? or is that all i get?

Did you put in the tighter clutch springs? Torque spring?
It should be okay.
But if the weather is rainy like its been up here Vancouver then you may wanted to try leaning off and on the throttle. The roller weights get stuck from the moisture. Whether its just rained, raining, or just finished. I find it the worst going up hills as the moisture makes it feel like your losing power but its just the nature of a two-stroke!

FYI:
Also,"the engines are designed for on and off running. I think that getting on and off the throttle all the time tends to mix the cool incoming mixture with the hot exhaust gases. This cools the area over the exhaust port and keeps the piston from melting." from danmc.com

i did put the new springs in, but then took out the little green clutch springs, as they were so incredibly tight it seemed like the bike wouldnt go at all, but maybe i just didnt give it enough gas, not sure, either way, now i have the stock clutch springs in, but i still have the performance torque spring in there...

and as far as the on/off thing goes for the engine.. that kinda sucks, cause i ride a lot of full throttle, around 3 miles of my 6 mile trip to work/home is full throttle on i-99 ..ummm, am i gonna die or what?

devon, you only have stage 1 right...

if your getting to 47 then I wouldn't complain... That's pretty good...

I've got stage 3 plus and am only hitting 48 right now...

I got 2 more parts on the way that should correct my top end, but for now... The only difference I see from yours and mine are that I keep up with acceleration till I max at 48... your scooter slows acceleration after 40 to 47....

Don't freak out :D
Just don't hold the throttle full for long periods of time.
Twist it back periodically, that's all.
You'll be fine.
(But if you do blow your piston, you can replace it with a 70cc kit :D )

I only know 2 throttle positions.......none...... and ...... FULL!!

Here in south Florida, ALL the roads are straight and there can be MILES between stop lights.:D

yeah and now i believe i'm getting to at least 50, i think a bit more, but it's hard to tell with the speedometer only going to 40... but the needle is almost in the 6 o clock position... downhill i can get it all the way to the oil can icon, how fast is that?

I'm guessing you have a vino... and that the vino speedo is different then the zuma's...

I first read your post and was think BS... then thought I'll bet the vino speedo is round and allows for the speedo to spin 360....

So... with that... not sure how fast that is...

For those with Zuma's though.. I trimmed a little off the speedo needle... So it can spin the full 360.... So if I ever get it above 50mph... I can guess how fast I'm going...

:D

Not 100% but I think my Zuma's stock speedo will go to the 6:00 position as well with 0 mods to it (downhill of course)

Donno... I thought mine went faster then I looked at it... I realised the stock speedo stopped just around 45ish... It hit the plastic at the bottom of the speedo guage... I took about 1/3 of the needle off...

And it works a full 360 now...

yes, i have a vino, hence my post in the VINO section of the forum... according to the speedo, the 6 o clock position would be like, 60mph, and though i only get it there going downhill, and have even passed it a bit going down a steep hill, i seriously doubt i'm going 60... anyone know anything about installing another speedometer on a vino? i know nothing of it... guess i'll go look it up on the information superhighway...

I don't pay attention to what "forum" I am in and I am guessing neither do most that use the "NEW POST" tab- just look at every thing that is going on......

Your a sassy lil fellow aren't you Devonrs? Perhaps you didn't mean to sound like such a smart ass... hard to tell on forums sometimes. Just a lil advise, put a smiley or something so we know your just jokin.

As for your question, you can buy a tiny tack that hooks up to your speedo. Really good ones show your rpm's and mph. I've heard people using GPS things too. As for installation, I have no clue :D !

sorry, didn't mean to sound like that, i didn't even realize about the new post tab.. i'll have to start using that as well... as for the tiny tack that hooks up to the speedo, that sounds awesome, any idea where i can get one or what they're called exactly so i can look for one?

http://www.sip-scootershop.com/

There's a huge variety of speedos and tachs at that site. The site is in german I think, but you can change it to english. When you do that it shows you everything in US dollars too. I've never shopped here before though, so I dunno if their service is any good.
