Hi All,
I am new to the forum, and fairly new to the world of scootering. So, hello to everyone! I am glad to have found this forum... it looks like one of the more active ones -?- and i do like a good forum!
I have a 2003 Derbi GP1, and am loving it!!! But, like most enthusiasts, I WANT MORE!! So, I am considering upgrading with the Metrakit SP series of parts , including the 70cc kit, crank, pipe, and a 21mm carb. Seems like this is a good fast set up, without going full race. I am concerned with durability... but seeing as its a NiSi (?) lined cylinder... I think it should stand up well... any thoughts on these parts?
Eventually I will do the tranny with probably the Malossi overrange... looks like the best way to get the most out of extra power.
I was also wondering if you add a little oil to your gas if you have a light, high revving setup... just as a precaution?
Thanks fellers...
Steve

Well first off, welcome to the forums. they have great info and we really need some more Derbi owners. The Metrakit parts are a great line of parts and they last a while too. If you did all those parts without doing the tranny its not going to work so well since you will need different weights and all. As for adding a bit of oil to the tank I personally do just because I dont know how well that oil pump likes putting so much in and I just add about an ounce to each tankfull.

Thanks for the greeting ::handleba
Metrakit... Malossi... Polini... and the others... don't know which offers the best of performance, and durability. I guess you cannot go wrong with any of them. Whats an estimate of how long they should last without new rings?
As for the tranny... its nicely set up as is, but not sure how it will handle the extra power. The bike goes just over 60 as is, and my aim is to get it doing that speed, but not having to tuck doing it! The extra poop on the hills will also be nice.

I would think that the Polini and Metrakit parts would be the best among those companies. We had a thread on how long cylinders would last on here and you might be able to find it in the archives. I am guessing though with proper tuning and all you could expect anywhere from 3-15k.

OK.. after which its a ring job right? Then good to go?

Usually replacing the rings will do it but sometimes you might have to replace the whole piston with rings.

So... I'm going through all the old posts, and notice that Provo sells a complete stage II kit for the GP1. Very convenient. It offers the HP cylinder, which differs from the SP in that its a 2 ring cast iron. I was wondering... and I know this is an age old topic, but how do the 2 compare in terms of durability? Seems like a 2 ring cast iron might wear more slowly??? I know it won't be as free reving...

Well... I dont think that Erich has been selling the Derbi performance parts lately as there arent so many Derbi owners out there. You might wanna call or email him.
As for the Aluminum vs Cast cylinders there is a post based on that and as long as the bike is tuned properly the aluminum is better. Really all the two ring piston does is create more friction.

make sure you get the metrakit sp2 series stuff, not the old sp stuff.

Looks like Im going to order myself up a sweet SP setup from the Metrakit dealer here in Canada.
800V1932 SP head / cyl kit
846V1915 Variator belt
850V1911 Crank SP
871V1130 SP Pipe
911V1121 Carb 21mm
923V1110 Reeds
945V5101 Rollers 4.5
945V5102 Rollers 5.5
975V1910 Bearing and seal kit
910G0880 Jets (various)
18 HP and 13,500 RPM here I come! I am going to leave the variators alone for now... but with 13,500 RPM, the scoot should be right quick!
I am having a hard time imagining what 18hp is going to feel like, compaired to the 7.5 I have now... but i am looking forward to finding out! :) It will be a few weeks before I get on this... so more to come amigos! o_o

Crap... just got some bad news. Our daycare situation has fallen apart, so plans are all on hold for the mean time... what lousy timing! Wife might have to stay home till we can get things settled.
I will ask the dealer about the SP2 parts. Anyone know what the difference is? The variaters will be done... patience my son... patience. Can't do it all at once... there will be nothing left to wrench on!

Sorry to hear that. As for the difference, the SP2 parts are made a little better and they are a newer design. The only reason I ask about the vari is that is the essential thing for the tranny to work well. Without it, the shifting will not be so great.

Mark's ride looks sweet! 75 MPH sure would be nice... I immagine it surprises a lot of motorists!--- "Aw, geez honey better speed up... isn't that a scooter that just blew past us?"

My scoot has done 75 on GPS- I think she might run a little harder and faster now that but have not GPS'ed it to find out. I dropped my scoot off, told the shop to "get it done" and they did.
SP or SP2- not sure what the difference is but my SP parts run and sound GREAT!!

So, did you just get all those parts you listed earlier or did you throw in a vari and swap out some better parts? Ahh, now the waiting begins when your checking the tracking number every 20mins.lol:D

Got all the parts listed! I asked the dealer about SP1 vs SP2, and he said SP was SP and not to worry, its all good. 18 HP... Holly crap this thing is going to MOVE OUT!! o_o

You will be happy- I am! Not sure about the HP and RPM #'s I am getting but my scoot really scoots. I think those numbers might be inflated but never had my scoot RPM'ed or dyno'ed to prove other wise. My dealer said I am rev'ving around 22K RPM but never gave me a HP #...
speedy_scooter
09-18-2005, 11:46 AM
Yea, I think your dealer was lying to make it sound good there mark. 22k sounds a bit high since evo's dont even go that high but who cares as long as your doing 70+:D

I was going to get a tiny-tach to check but I really don't care- runs fast enough for me so really does it matter. Part of me wants to check but the other part of me says why waste the money- not like I am going to not like the scoot if I am only turning 10K RPM...
Erich advertised it at 18HP/ 13.5K RPM when he sold them as well- think that is what MK says but not sure if anyone has ever verified it.

the pro race stuff is somewhere in the 14,000 plus range.

The SP setup with a 21mm carb should put out 18 HP and redline at 13,500. I think the pro turns over at 14,500.

With a SP set-up..I was gonna say realistically....18hp..if you are not lazy and spend some time tuning.......or let a shop tweak the top end....Do you have a DYNO near you?....If so let us Know...
