Just bought a 2004 Zuma. How well does just a new pipe work on the zuma's? Is there a governor washer in the variator on the new Zuma's?

I say there are no restrictors pipe or variator... however king who used to work for yamaha as a mechanic says there was...
I never saw them on mine...
As far as just a pipe.. You need to change your springs in the clutch and usually have to change your roller weights...
Correct guys...

So Probably The Best Thing Would Be Something Like The Stage 1 Kit. I Would Like To At Least Get In The 45 Mph Range With Mine.

unless I'm just an idiot... which I don't think so...
My scooter only hits a max of 48mph...
I have stage 1, 2 and 3... so gettting a max of 45 might be possible but you'll loose it all on any hill or with wind...
Just a thought...

how much did the stage 1 help with acceleration and mid range power?

i did all 3 stages at once...
sorry i don't know how stage 1 helped...

just installed stage 1. would only reach 35 mph with full kit installed.
the stall on the clutch with the yellow springs was way to high.
put the stock ones back and stock torque spring with large shim.
4gr wght's in variator . results
slow take off from 0-10 mph after that it hits the pipe good mid to top
speed . I am 240 lbs and I hit 45 mph with 10-15 mph on coming wind.
my son is 230 lbs and with no wind and on a flat he peg's the speedo
it hits the plastic can go no futher. top speed ? :D

mine stock will run 40-41 on flat ground. Sounds like I may just want to put bigger tires on it. Got any tire size reccomendations?

we let a 160 lbs friend ride it and somebody close to same weight ride
his stock zuma their both 2004 model's after 10 mph he was left behind
so far it was not funny he just gave up after 100 yrd's and was not a
happy camper

weight is = to slower speed
160 lbs -200 lbs = over 45 mph
can not tell speedo can not go any higher
it is pegged and hitting the plastic
also take off might be better with a little stiffer clutch springs
but not yellow on my zuma.

if you dont use the heavier clutch springs it will be too slow off the line....
zumanator
09-06-2004, 08:53 PM
yellow one's with the kit were to stiff clutch would not ingage all
the way at full throttle would go 35mph no more.
need springs in between yellow and stock
my take off is only 15% slower than all stock parts
zumanator

also I could not tell a difference with the torque springs,
stock with large shim or stiff kit spring?

Huh?
What are you using to measure speed with?
My speedo says low-mid 40's which I know is not very accurate in most cases. I have had cars track me for a good distance and they are saying low-mid 40's as well.
Only 35 BEFORE any installs and the same results after?

stock- 40 mph from speedometer w/ 230 lb rider flat no wind
full stage 1 - 35 mph clutch is slipping,
pipe + 4gr wght stock torque spring w/large shim stock clutch springs=?
speedo is at max can go no futher w/ 230 lb rider flat no wind

My zuma is realy slow off the line it feels like the clutch or belt slipping? What weight stock zuma roller weights? Can the cluch wear out on a zuma? Do I change springs?

The newer Zumas have the largest tires made...there ain't any bigger in 10" size....
SO...the recommendations (on this site) must be for the older models...

I installed the stage one on my Zuma and was very satisfied. I weigh in at 200lbs. and per my GPS: (on realitively flat ground)
The top end went from 40 to 46 mph
Where it would go 0-25mph in the stock configuration, it now hits 30mph in that same distance.
I'm in the process of upgrading to Stage 2 and hope to have it completed this weekend. I will provide the GPS numbers once that is complete and the cylinder is broke in.

Just curious, why did you put in the shim? Was it just to make the spring more stiff?

I tried 3 ways, one with new spring, one with stock spring, and last with
stock spring and large shim, it did not make much of a change although this could be because of not using the yellow clutch springs.
I need to find different springs or an ajustable clutch and than put the large spring back in.

take off is not that much slower than stock zuma maybe 1/2 bike length
up to 30 ft, when I hit 10 mph pipe kicks in and it''s by by. :D

my son rode with a passenger yesterday
230 lb + 160 lb  to much wght for zuma
he still hit 40 mph on the speedo
not bad for for the poor over loaded zuma

vailitrev -
THANKS for your post!!!!
That is the first GPS #'s I have seen for before/after.
I know what my butt dyno would say and what my speedo reads but have never seen posted GPS'ed #'s!!
THANKS!!!
I can't wait for your stage II!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My buddy Jered is stuck at 48 with a stage III...
40 MPH to 46 MPH is 15% increase. I am hoping you get 15% more MPH with stage II which would put you 6.9 MPH more for a hair shy of 53 MPH!
There is hope for us Zoomers after all!!

I put in my stage 2 and I have some top end numbers but I don't have the mid-range or top-end right yet. The acceleration is awesome, it flat flys. I ordered a 105 and 115 jet because I'm running lean on top-end. At mid-range I'm running rich so I will raise the clip back to the stock location.
I have stage 2 kit and I also have a polini speed clutch and have taken three runs:
#1 49.2
#2 52.0
#3 53.2
These are all GPS #'s, no wind, 84 F, 92% Humidity, 210# rider, elevation 870ft above sea-level and on a fairly flat asphalt road

this EXACTLY describes my efforts with my 03 Zuma / Stage I combo- I will be trying your idea with the stock clutch springs this weekend!!!
heres hoping....

Will technigas pipe work well for a stock zuma? I could get one for $100 is that a good price?

on my next r the bracket did not fit very well, this created a problem with the
the pipe which erik is taking care of. I will have to modify or make a new bracket when I get my new pipe. I have heard on some zuma's they fit ok
just not on mine.

As long as it's made for the 2002+ zuma's it should work...
Erich mentioned that some of the exhausts he has require a minor mod before they will fit onto the zuma...
The $100 price is about 1/3 the cost of most "resonable priced" exhausts...

you have to have a full stage 1 setup, with pipe only your take off will
be very very slow up to 30 mph. your new power band will not balance
with out changes to variator and clutch springs. it seems in this type of
cvt transmission every thing is a balancing act.

I had a similar problem, to everyone who is going to install this pipe, be very careful when mounting it!!! You will have to make bracket modifications to get it to fit.
Do not get it to fit by cranking on the the cylinder bolts this will cause the pipe to crack. Get the pipe to fit on the cylinder as close as possible and then modify your bracket to accommodate the pipe.
Just my 2 cents after installing 2 of them.
