View Full Version : More Power!

I have a Geely Big Chief Retro (two actually) with the Yamaha Linhai engine that has been de-restricted. I get up up to 48mph on the flats. What I need is more climbing power for our rolling Seattle hills. At the slightest grade, I lose significant speed.
Any ideas or has anyone had any luck with the Vino perfomance mods offered by Provo Scooter? It looks like my Retros are a knock off and I cannot see a reason not to give them a go.
Thanks in advance for the advice.

there is a kid that lives near me who has one of these scooters and i tried to fit a technigas he bought onto it but it wouldnt fit. the reason is the way the centerstand is welded to the frame makes it so that the stand sits to far forward making any pipe but the stock one hit and making it so that the pipe doesnt go up and be able to seal against the cylinder. if you want you could grind off the centerstand and its connecting tubes and put a side stand on so you would be able to get around that problem.

Welcome !
Not knowing the answer to your specific question, i'd suggest reading, searching old posts, and reading some more...there's a LOT of info here and on the www.Provoscooter.com how-to's...
Have fun !

I could not see any interferance with centerstand. Took the big leap and ordered the Stage 1 kit. I'll let you all know how it works out. -G

i hope that it will work for you in the end. i just know on that particular one i saw it wouldnt be able to fit any pipe but the stock one. are you able to take any pics? that might make it easier so if there is an issue we can help resolve it.

The 'real' pivot point for the kick stand is well behind the exhaust port. Unless the pipe makes a really weird bend, I should be OK. The aluminum backet you can see in the photo, could actually be removed because it is not even being used. -G

have you changed weights in the variator? go with a lighter weight thats what i had to do for my phantom went from a 11 gram to a 9 gram made a world of a difference...the other thing you can do to make a little more power is get rid of the air box and go with a filter directly on your carb if there is room and check your tires for balancing if they need it at all....

The kit arrived yesterday - unfortunately missing the mounting bracket for the exhaust pipe. Having bit of trouble getting a hold of Provo Scooter to get the parts replaced (2 emails, 1 phone call).
Hopefully, I will hear from them soon. In the meanwhile, I'm going to install the variator over the weekend.
Think positive thouhts for me. -G

Still waiting for parts and having a bit of problem in the communications department. The variator I was sent was not the right one for the scooter.
Perhaps this was not such a good idea afterall - especially as I've put out over $300 for?

Don't know much about your scooter but where there is a will there's a way. Improvise and good luck. BTW those are great pics

Parts for exhaust arrived today. I installed and took a quick ride.
Note: Since the variator sent was not the right one for the scooter, I could not complete its install. I did install the new Kevlar belt, however.
Sounds cool - runs horrible! Before I could get to over 35 in less than a block - tonight I could not even get it to 35...
After less than a mile, I brought it home and parked it.
Could the belt be slipping or do you think the new exhaust is totally wrong for the scooter? Looking for ideas.

I have worked on a friend's geely.
I would be skeptical of buying any aftermarket parts for it.
I am speaking this in truth, not prejiduce.
One thing that is guaranteed to work is re-jetting your carb's main jet and "raising" the needle.
I think you will be surprised at how much more power you will get for those hills!
This is a simple and free procedure (if you have numbered drill bits).
I would not bother with the aftermarket exhaust and variator since they are worth more than the Geely scooter.
My friends new stock Vino would hit a steep hill and slow to 25-28.
After re-jetting, She would pull at 35-40 with a stock exhaust and no other modifications!
Her stock jet was a mikuni size 68. We have her at 70 now.
We tried 72, but we wanted reliability rather than excess power.
The #70 idled the smoothest.
I believe you might have a hard time finding a jet for a Geely. (assumption)
I would recomend just saving your time and and money by drilling your jet.
Remember- stock Vino is a #68, so I would try the #71 from the chart below.
The following is mechanic talk, so if you do not understand, print this and take it to a tool shop and show them this...
the drill sizes are as follows:
mikuni jet # 66 =#71 drill bit=.0260"=.660 mm
** the one you want is** #71 =#70 drill bit=.0280"=.711mm
Search the forum for a thread called "Got a new vino? Try this!"
It will tell you step by step how to re-jet and adjust the carb.
Good luck my friend!

i just bought a used geely retro from a friend of mine for $50 because it didn't run. I discovered it was the plastic transmission gear that was shredded. After another $40 I have it moving. I have quickly discovered that I need more power or at least speed. I would like to be able to go at least 40 mph to keep up with traffic in town. I have been reading about people using Vino parts on their geely. Do I have to have a Yamaha engine in my retro 21 for them fit. Gizmoneer mentions he has a Yamaha Linhai engine. How do I know what engine I have? It looks like Gizmoneer's but without the rear luggage bag. I only have a rack. Bone stock i can only get about 28 mph on flats. One guy mentions adding a Yamaha carburetor and then getting his geely up to 55 mph. Is that feasible? Will a vino carb fit on my retro 21? Please help

wow.. another geely failure... LOL...
I can't see why they'd think plastic gears would work...
Maybe us americans are just to FAT... LOL...
Sorry I don't have experience with geely's but hopefully someone will be able to help out...
and BTW: welcome to the forums.

Yea..I think Gizmoneer posted a pic ...and Yamaha Linhai was actually on the Trans cover......spelled out in Raised letters....If not it will probably be a Minerelli Clone motor.........................................On a seperate note..this Skinny young Guy was Riding a GSX 750 on my street..we had just nodded at each other, and he stopped before he turned right....I was looking back at him and I guess his clutch hand let out too fast...he spun the bike around in a "U" and High-Sided himself off about 5 feet away from the bike!..I guess the bike....(Oops I meant He) was alright...as I didn't wan't to ride up to him and embarass him more.. He was wearing a full helmet BTW...he started it up and rode right back home....... I think he was Nowhere near heavy enough for that Bike...(160 pounds tops) ;no

Do you know if "Minerelli Clone" will accept a Yamaha vino carburater, clutch, or any yamaha parts? I need to get my scooter to go at least 40mph

most minarelli scoots are able to use parts interchangeably but not always. remember that there are two different sizes of cranks for variators.

Somewhere on the net last year, I read about a guy with a Geely who had broken his plastic "drive" sprocket
He went to a farm supply store and bought a huge washer and welded the metal sprocket piece to the washer.
There you go--- a steel sprocket!

Please help Not to overlook the obvious, have you checked the exhaust to see if it is restricted? Is this a 2 stroke scooter or 4 stroke? Geeley started coming out with 4 strokes in the past year or so.

most geely's are a 4stroke but more recently the geely's have been using 2stroke motors.

I thought it was the other way around Speedy--the earlier ones were 2 stroker and the recent ones 4...to get ready for the 2006 EPA regs.

I guess it depends where you buy it--LAst week I was talking to a guy in town who just bought a Big Chief on the net--his is a 2 stroke as well. But on some of the web sites all they advertise is 4 stroke ones. Confusing

common guys, can we focus on my problem? Please. Okay, I need to clarify a few things for you all. First, it is a 2 stroke with oil that is injected. It does not have anything stamped on the transmission cover so I'm assuming its the clone engine. I took off the muffler to see if there was any kind of restrictions in it, but didn't see anything. Of course, I didn't really know where to look. I heard of the restrictions being like a washer welded into the muffler and when I looked at it after I disconnected it from the scooter, I didn't see anything. One guy said he put a yamaha carb. on his Geely and took out some fingers and achieved 55 mph. He mentions the cost of carb. and some adapter plate. What is this adapter plate? I have a chain in my tranny now. Will a new variator and clutch and kevlar belt from a Vino fit in my tranny? Will it help?
