View Full Version : Scootists... how old are you?

I feel like I'm too old to be riding a scooter sometimes.. people I work with look at me like "YOU ride a scooter?"... then I get the "scooters are for kids who can't afford a car!", "I haven't ridden a scooter since I was 13", etc etc...
so .. how old are you guys/gals?

riding is much better when you have the option to drive a car but you CHOOSE to scoot! Everybody looks at you that way because they wish they had one too. :D

Here in Provo there are so many college students and you don't have to pay for a parking perm at Utah Valley State College there are a ton of them around and all ages.

That's the reason here everone looks, cuts me off (so I have to pull over), comes running in parking lots... ETC... Just so they can ask about my scooter... They all are in awe when I say I get 50+MPG... more like 70+ not 100% on how much I get with all the mods... I haven't checked yet but it's still over 100miles on a tank...
They all are wishing they had one... At $2.00 a gallon for gas... Everyone here drived trucks... $45-55 to fill a tank compaired to my $3.00 or less... Premium grade gas...
Got to love it!

I wonder if each age group has a favorite scoot to use? Like are Vinos more popular with the older crowd or the younins? Like wise for Zuma, etc. etc.

I will take that as a compliment. My daughter who is closer to your age once gave me a button that says " I may grow older, but I will never grow up" ;wink)
As for your other question, I prefer the more vintage look of the Vino. Could be because I am more vintage myself :D

I sold my dirt bike to get my Zuma, (not much use for a dirt bike when your in college). And my uncle had told me about some people that he knew that had a Zuma and jumped it so I figured it was tough enough. And then I looked online and saw that a Zuma was 5 mph faster than a Vino stock. (They were the same price at the time too). So I didn't feel like I had much of as decision to make!!
sooznd
08-11-2005, 09:45 AM
The stock Vino is restricted to 30 mph, then once you remove the restrictors it will go 40 mph. the Zuma has no restrictions and should go 38-40 right out of the box.
I like all the options available for giving the Vino a custom look--am not so much into speed. The 40 mph is fast enough for me, although I enjoy the thrill of going downhill at ~ 46 mph.

I'm 63.
After decades of riding Goldwings, BMW's and more recently a VTX 1800 Retro, I decided it was time for a scooter to cruise around the county roads and two lane highways.
The fuel injection, water cooled, auto tranny of the Majesty 400 was exactly what I need to spend a few hours riding around with the grandchildren.

I'm 34 and had a Zuma back in the late 80's ( bright yellow and black like a bumble bee) and never had the cash or the internet for parts. Now that I'm all grown up I just had to get another one and put ridiculous money and time into it. watching people move quickly onto the sidewalk when the hear me comming allways puts a smile on my face. ::handleba

So over 45 is ancient, you say. :) Well, I'm 54 but I consider myself to be a "classic". Guess that's why I picked the Yamaha Vino 50cc. Looks like I'm in very good company.
In the 70's I only had cycles for transportation. Started out with a Bridgestone 175 that I had to jump start each time, then a Yamaha 250, and traded up to a Yamaha 500. I sold the Yamaha 500 in 1979. So now here I am with sweet Vivian (my '05 Vino Classic) and I'm back on 2 motorized wheels and lovin' it.
I love my scooter and at this point am very satisfied with both her power and speed. She was already de-restricted when I bought her. She'll easily crank up to 45 (I'm guessing, since the speedo only goes to 40, but the needle goes way past 40) zips along at 35-40 with ease, even on hills. I suspect she might even go faster than 45, but since she is in her break-in period I have not gone WOT for more than a few minutes so I haven't seen just how far past 40 the speedo needle will go. I'll get some pictures up soon.
I've really been enjoying and learning a lot from this site and already feel like I know some of y'all.

I sell real estate and I can cruise the mid-town neighborhoods real easy;plus they are "approachable" meaning a lot of conversations get started and wa-la...my sign is in your front yard!...I laugh and jokingly say you can get in the Land Cruiser when we are lookin at properties over 250k! Totally kidding, but I do use it to run to the office and short errands and just scootin!
Plus it is "Prudential" blue...gonna re do the graphics with some white reflective Prudential "rock" logos. I get razzed by my buds cause it is sooo unlike me to have one of these...but W.T.H.! 80mpg and a smile.

Finally found what I was looking for. in this article (http://www.decaturdaily.com/decaturdaily/business/051002/scooting.shtml) Jen Dreis of the Mortorcylce Industry Council says that in 1990, retired people accounted for only 7.5 percent of motor-scooter sales. In 2003, that percentage had risen to 22 percent. The median age of scooter owners increased from 26 in 1990 to 46 in 2003. :smokin:

Hey, maybe that'd be a fun thread for us old timers: What was your first scoot?
Mine was a 1980 (I think) Yamaha QT-50. Drove it everywhere. Ran a solid 45 mph once I took the governor off of it. Never once wore a helmet and never once got pulled over for that or for going 45 in 30mph moped state. Kids, don't try this nowadays.

Starting with mini bikes, going to dirt bikes and ending with street bikes. After being without any bike other than my mountain bike for years, and always having an itch for a scooter, At 49 I got one. I don't even think about how I look or what others might think. I wanted one and that was that. The Vino caught my eye because of the retro kinda old school look. And doing the style mods has been just as much fun as riding it. I get alot of compliments and one old fella, LOL older than me, asked me if it was for sale. I dig my scoot and all you other scoot freaks here on the Forum. :8wave: :smokin:

A friend of mine and I would sit under a tree talk about how we were going to buy Lambrettas when we turned 14. We were going to be sooooo cool. In Ohio, at that time, you could have a scooter at 14. Just before I turned 14, they changed the law to 16. By that time, I wanted a car. Well, here it is 43 years later, after scores of cars, a dozen motorcycles (still have an HD Heritage), I finially have my scooter.
So, the way I look at it, I'm 57 goin' on 14. Pick one.

Don’t know how I missed this thread. Well I’m a 49 year old retired Coastie (Weps4). When not riding ships I was riding motorcycles dirt and street, still doing the last two. I decided I wanted a scooter after another retired Coastie I know restored an old Honda trail 90. Being more of a technician then a restorer I decided on the Vino 125. So now I when I need another 6 pack, barbeque sauce, or Debra down the street needs something fix, I just light the small fire on the Vino and take off passing all the golf carts in my community.

30 Year old. 220lb body builder riding a Prebug Zuma! LOL. .. pretty funny actually.
My last car was a 450 Horse Power Lancer Evolution IX (on pump gas). I hated driving my evo 1/2 mile to and from work, with such a short distance to drive it was actually bad for the car.
Bought the Zuma, Evo sat in the garage.
Got married, sold the Evo and bought a 4 door family car.
Anyway, I get made fun of all the time about riding my scoot, but the same guys that tease me are the same guys that keep telling me they want to buy one to go riding with me. Funny how that works.

For perspective--I bet most of the Harley riders I see are pushing 70....either that or they have lived very hard lives........

Hey Mr. "body builder," why the hell would you drive anything a 1/2 mile to work? You undoubtedly spend a minimum of 30 minutes on a treadmill during any given workout!

The U.S. in most places have a lot of growing up to do. Scootering is not only for all ages but in most countries it's the only means. I am 45 this year and I park my scooter at work amidst the Beemers, Volvos and Hummers. Ironically, everyone wants me to park next to them because I provide that extra room so other cars do not park too close. Then you go to a progressive town like Santa Barbara and you see all ages on scooters from executive types in suits, college kids and surf bums and nobody gives it a second thought. All-in-all, I do not feel too old, I am not embarrassed and I have fun riding it. Be proud and have fun, especially when scootin' to the front of the line of cars waiting for the light to turn green.

I wonder if each age group has a favorite scoot to use? Like are Vinos more popular with the older crowd or the younins? Like wise for Zuma, etc. etc.

I love it.
I take it with me (on my sailboat) when I take trips/vacations o_o

Must be a 'youngun thinking 45 is ancient! Wait 'till you're about to be 60 and have been riding "Small Bore" stuff for 40 years! :D I still love the freedom of the wind in my face. If I ever stop feeling like that it's time for the Undertaker to come to my house and measure me for a pine box! lol! Gabe::usa::

I am 28.
I dont think you are ever too old to be on two wheels until you can no longer keep the thing upright. Then you get to ride in an entirely different kind of scooter. As for myself, when I get that old I will just add a sidecar and keep on going. :)

The older I get, the less I care what other's think (part of the reason I have owned flashier bikes in the past). And the less I care what people think, the happier I am.

Why waste time trying to impess everyone else when you can be doing what you want to do. Screw everyone else.

Agreed. The problem with human nature is that most of us don't realize that early enough.

40 yrs. old. I work where there may be 50 or 60 big bikes out front on a nice day in the summer. Only a few scooters. I just bought my scooter and will be curious to the reaction from the "bikers". Hey, top speed in town is 35 MPH. I ride 5 miles one way to work. I have a Nissan Armada, but choose to scoot.
