I would be interested to find out a bit more about my Zuma (2001).. .like who makes the engine (Yamaha?), suspension, tranny, etc.. are any of the components similar with other manufacturer's scooters? advantages/disadvantages of different scooter brands/models? Weak points/strong points of the Zuma?
I'd be interested to find out any info about it.
Also, how does the battery charge? Obviously these things don't have alternators on them..
My battery does not seem to take a charge, .. I replaced it last year, and have tried (with no luck) charging it from a battery charger as well as driving the scoot to charge it up.. how can I tell if the charging system on the scoot is working properly?

Perhaps I have a very rare scooter that is completely undocumented, and nobody knows anything about? It's a 2001 Zuma..
Something I just found out about: the engine is a "Vertical" engine, as opposed to the newer Zumas having a "Horizontal" engine. I know this because the pipe I was sold is for a Horizontal engine, and if I bolted it on my engine, it would be sticking out the side of my scoot at a 90 degree angle .. not a good idea :)
So.. now I know that there were different engine configurations on different year Zumas.
I also found that when I had the side case open to replace the clutch springs and rollers, one of the parts was stamped "made in Italy".. OK, Yamaha is (as far as I know) a Japanese company.. so do they outsource the engines, or just some of the components? Are the engines compatible with any other brand scooters?
What is the advantage of a horizontal engine configuration versus vertical?
Since nobody knows anything about these scooters, I'll post things as I find them. Apparently I'm a pioneer here with the 2001 Zuma :)

Erich posted a few weeks ago the complete production history of the Zuma, not sure where it is on here.

I'll look for it.
UPDATE: I emailed Erich cause I can't find it either, and I combed the entire board manually, thread by thread, and with the search with no luck. I even hit the old boards and the articles and still can't find it, but I know it was there.

Still looking to get some info about the pre bug eye Zuma (mine is a 2001).. I haven't had much luck in the other thread, so I'll try combining my questions into this one:

To my knowledge, Yamaha and MBK (French) teamed up to produce the Zuma. My 2001 is built in France and the manual is printed there as well. It's a zinger of an engine. I can lift the front wheel if I sit up and give it some throttle.

yamaha owns MBK the makers of the nice looking zumas not the bug eye's one. yamaha also owns minarelli the makers of the engines that are in our bikes, zumas, jog, vinos, mbk scooter, aprilia's, and most of the other scooters out there. thats why we can get all those nice racing parts for our bikes. i also ride a jog that is fast. yamahas are the way too go.
