What the safest way to lock Vino?
Or in general what the best way to lock a scooter?
It seems general knowledge that Krypto NY chain are almost unbreakable, the problem is useing them correctly.
Should I lock the front or back wheel? (what's the odds of thieves removing one of the wheel? I guess front wheels are less safe)
Since I will park the scooter overnight in Ballston (VA) I'm thinking of using Krypto NY chain for back wheel to a 8" tree and a Krypto Barbed wire for the front one (both locked with the same lock). Good enough? (or is it way too much?) Suggestions/comments?
The NY chain info is at:

You should invest in a noise maker too I.E. an alarm...Especially in the Ballston area because of all the foot traffic (party-vile) around the area. I would think about a cover too...I saw that Target has small 10' boat covers on clearance for $20, I was thinking about getting one for my scoot. They are the heavy duty silver covers that would stand up to the elements and they have cinch rope to keep people from taking a peek...If you didn't buy your locks already, I saw an ad on Craig's list for one...I would buy it but already have enough locks :D ... craigs list ad (http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/bik/39271049.html)

I use a thick motorcycle lock set up. Works well as long as they don't cut down the tree to get to your scooter you're OK. I've seen a stop sign post bent 90 degrees so the scooter thieves could just pick up the scoot and slide it straight off.

Actually the tree I want to lock to is not too big: only 8".
There is a electric pole nearby which look more resistent (a foot in diameter) but it is between the main road and the service road with a small curb (not a pedestrian curb, just a concrete divider between Glebe rd and the service rd) of like 2 feet. I could leave it on this small concrete platform, do you think police will bother me or worse tow the scooter since it is too close to a main rd?

PS: any preferences on which wheel to lock (front/back)?

I live in Manhattan and I park my Vino on the sidewalk on a very busy street, locked to a lamp post w/ the Kryptonite NY Fahgettaboudit 5' chain w/ the EV Disc Lock (Black, not the yellow) around the back tire, and a Dowco scooter cover w/ combination lock.
The week before my Vino arrived I did heavy research and was told by a Police Officer that this is the best I could do. Invest in the $140 chain w/ Black lock and a cover w/ lock. He recommended The Fahgettaboudit because the lock can't be jimmyed AT ALL (virtually pickproof) unlike the yellow lock and the links are thicker and tighter. He was equally emphatic about a cover w/ lock to deter attention that naturally a scooter would get. Finally he suggested an additonal disc lock as an added precaution but since the Vino only has drum brakes it was a mute point.
He also added that if anyone really wanted my scooter they would probably get it but it doesn't mean I can't make it harder for them to do so! ............. That's a NYC cop for you. :)
I hope this helped?

Do a lot of scooters get stolen, or are we just paranoid? When I run into the store I find myself wanting to pass by the door every 2 minutes to make sure my scooter is still there. I think I'm bordering on paranoia. Did I spell that right? I guess it just depends on the area, eh?

LOL, yeah, think we had about ninety thefts in DC this year, and I haven't looked at N. VA and MD's stats for the year so far. Partially due to the thefts my insurance has doubled in the past year.

About 4years ago,two young hellians stoled my old little honda elite 50.The cops caught them 20miles from me.The rear passenger was carrying a 10pack of beer. The scooter was locked up on a steel post. They dug the post up.Like the cop says,if they want it,they will find away to get it..

I know this is an old thread but just had to put in my two cents. The back wheel for sure. The front wheel is easy to get off. You have to remove the exhaust to get the rear off.
