When in doubt, do a plug chop. If you here it ping, it's way too lean. You may just need small adjustments.

Split this from the high compression thread..

Hear it ping? I thought a plug chop was just checking the color of the plug?

I am an idiot but can someone explain the right way to read the plug?

If the plug is white its to lean, If its really dark its to rich. A nice choclate color is what your going for.

I was more wondering about this "ping".

I went from a "1" to some where around "6" on the Plug Chart (http://www.provoscooter.com/vbull/article.php?a=73).

I was running and fouling NGK B9ES plugs, put in a Champion RN2C- they are listed at equal/innerchangeable plugs and now the scoot runs great again.

I was mixing oil/fuel and using oil injector as well but going to try not to have to do that anymore. Champion plug had a lot better color, was able to idle and use electric starter- none of which I could do with the NGK. Most people favor the NGK's I think?

Of course- all of this could be mute due to I am the one adding oil to the fuel- just dumped some in, didn't regulate how much very well..

Ive never heard a scooter ping when it was lean, my old dodge daytona turbo would ping with crappy gas.

What is a ping?

Is that when your motor is running or when you are checking the plug? I have heard of "knocking".

Ping/knocking is the same thing...

pre-ignition of the fuel...

Higher octain fuel should eliminate this issue...

dieseling is where the engine is beyond "HOT" and is so hot it burns fuel and keeps the engine running after the ignition is turned off... the way to solve this is correct the over heating issue... and if it's doing it... the immediate fix, WOT the throttle and it dumps a large amount of cold fuel into the chamber and cools the engine to stop the problem...

if that all made since...
