I use Mobil 1 synthetic on my cars, and my Passat takes about 4.25 quarts, so I always have partial bottles left over- can I use this on the final transmission?

The manual says "yamalube 4, SAE10W30SE or GL gear oil," which to me appears to be a standard 10w30 motor oil- is this correct? If so, I would assume its safe to use the Mobil in there, no?

THX MUCHO!!!

edit: oil is 15w50 SuperSyn, NOT 0w50

...seriously... has nobody done this? I am reading the Mobil1 site- they keep mentioning the "final transmission" in their literature, but more on the motorcycle oil side- I want to try my 0w50 but am a bit nervous.. what do you all use?

Mobil One in 10W-30 was all I ran in my SCCA Mustang GT50.

When should we change this and how hard is it?

Is that what that plastic tube is for near the rear wheel- to drain it? And then put more in where that white cap is at?

The plastic tube looks like a vent...

The drain is the black nut on the bottom.

I was doing some reading on the net... I've seen in a couple of places that the final gear oil should be changed at 600 miles...

Just so we all know... OOPS I'm over 1000 miles... guess it's time to change it! Hope those darn gears come in quick...

Also I wouldn't run a 15w50 or a 0w50 in this since it calls for 10w30... Use whats suggested... It'll keep it in warrenty and or keep the parts as they should be, not add FRICTION.... Anotherwords it will make the scooter slower!

I agree 100% with Jered, I've changed mine and used Yamalube. The only suggestion I have is drain the old tranny oil into a quart oil bottle so you know exactly how much to put back in, otherwise it will spit out the breather tube.

A friend helped me change the trans oil on my Vino at at~ 350 miles. Used Mobil 10 W 30 synthetic because that was what he used on his Vino. No problems so far @ almost 800 miles.
Yamaha just wants you to buy their products.
I am going to switch from the Yamalube 2 S oil to a fully synthetic once I use up the extra bottles I bought from the dealer.

Quick question, can I use fully synthetic oil for my tranny. I have near to 300 miles on my Vino. Also when I can switch to fully syntethic on the reservoir oil for the motor? Thanks for the info.

yes and yes....

I use 10w30 Mobile 1 synthetic engine oil in my final drive case...

It calls for a "severe duty 10w30" but IMO synthetic oil it fine... I change it about every 500 miles or so...

The injection oil... yep... you can change it when ever you feel like.... how ever I recommend draining the tank as some dino oils and some synthetic (2-stroke) oils can not mix well and gum up the oil lines...

So either run the oil till it's almost dry before adding the synthetic or drain the tank...

That is great, I thought I had to wait until the end of my break in period before I can swith to fully synthetic for the motor oil.

I just remembered a little trick I learned on my Jetski forum........... Everybody (including myself) replaced the thick gearlube in the pump housing for Automatic Transmission Fluid, and gained +- 100 rpm......... I might have to try this on my Zuma!
