Airsal Piston Clearance

I just received a new 70cc Airsal head and piston and noticed that the piston doesn't clear the exhaust port by very much (3/4 inch.) Is this normal? My old 49cc head cleared the exhaust port completely. Just checkn, installed the head and piston and couldn't get it to start.
Also what should the gap be on the NGK spark plug? Please help a noob out!
