A ruckus couldn't smoke a cigar. Maybe a Metro, but that's it.

Ok, maybe everyone is too afraid to ask, so I'll do it.
After reading this board, I am getting some idea of this, but I just need a dummies guide.
What are roller weights, where are they, and what do they do? Why would Yamaha not have them properly adjusted already?

Hi, Darrell !!
Since I know as little as anyone, i feel uniquely qualified to answer your question.
This forum seems to be divided into two groups:
Those who have heavily modded their Zumas
Those who would like to, but question the ease that this might be accomplished.
Since I am a member in good standing of group two ( know nothing, but read lots ), I'd suggest you go over to Provoscooter.com , type in Zuma, and read about the stage 1 and 2 kits they sell. Then read the "how to" about installing a stage 1. The term "roller weight" will be all over the place, along with several other weird and wonderful words, all describing the guts of these great little cycles.
Welcome ! Have fun...read lots...ask questions...the people here are great and very friendly.

Keep on readin around here but a growing trend is to order the Malossi Variator in place of the Techmo..

Hey what's up. I will try to answer your variator/roller question.
The roller weights are located in the variator set up. When you take the tranny cover off of you scooter then that is where it would be found. On the zuma when you take the cover off and you look you see on the left is the variator with the rollers inside it, which is connected to the crank. Then you have the belt, and on the right side you have the clutch assembly.
Lighter weight rollers help you accelerate faster but then you lose some top speed. (that is what I found out with my own testing). Heavier rollers help you gain top end (you lose some bottom end with heavier rollers). It is a give/take relationaship.
Yamaha has the weights tuned properly. They tune the scooters for the most general rider. They probably have statistics on the riders and they then tune the bike for those people are considered "standard". Heavier/lights people will see different results
