So, the weather finally broke here in Northeast Ohio so I decided it was time to break out the Zuma.

I bought it new late last summer and, since I've never owned a motorcycle or scooter before, I went to the dealer in November and asked what I should do to it before storing it. The guy at the parts counter was pretty casual abut the whole thing. He sold me some fuel stabilizer, told me to put some in (mixing it according to the instructions on the bottle) fill up the tank drive it around for a week, so the stabilizer could work through the fuel system then put a little more in, top up the tank and I would be all set. I followed his instructions and put the bike in a friends garage (no heated but attached to his house), put the battery on a battery tender in my basement and waited for Spring.

When I went to start it it cranked and the engin turned over but it wouldn't fire. First I tried spraying a little starting fluid in the spark plug hole - it sputtered briefly and then nothing. Then I replaced the spark plug, still nothing. I checked to see if I am getting spark and I am so, I guess I have a fuel delivery problem.

I called the dealer and spoke to someone in service who said "that fuel stabilizer doesn't always work, you may need to have your carburator cleaned.." So, I'm taking it to the dealer later this week to have them get it running for me....which is probably gonna cost me seventy five bucks or so..

My questions are: what should I have done differently? and does anyone have any suggestions for getting it started? The scoot was running like a dream when I put it away for the winter..Would it help if I next winter I just stored it in my basement? If it's going to be in a heated place do I have to do anything to the fuel or whatever?

I hope I haven't submitted this to the wrong section of the board, I really wasn't sure which best applied to my question. Any thoughts or advice would be great.

Oh it's a completely stock 2004 Zuma with around 500 miles on it (like I said, I just got it in August of 2004) and I live near Cleveland, OH

I live in Maryland and didn't do anything-

Left it in my unattached, unheated shed over the Winter. I should have taken my battery out but am lazy....

I had to fine it up the 1st time using the kick start- the electric start turned it over for 3-4, 30 second burst but didn't start. Been running great ever since.

try holdin the throttle open about half way. i had to do that to get mine to start after letting it sit out side under our deck all winter. i didnt even use a batery tender. i just took it out and sat it in our house.

do you mean hold the throttle open half way while pressing the starter switch?

I twist my throttle back and forth when it is starting- between 0-50% throttle. I heard you should not do that with auto-choke but I have no have any issues as of yet...

Forget the electric starter. Kick it. No reason why it shouldn't run.

well if your going to store it next year, you can do the fuel stabilizer but the best thing i think is to disconnect the fuel line to your carb and run the motor till the carb is totally dry. or better yet, just take the carb off and remove the bottom bolt to get the gas our. having a dry carb means nothing will get blocked or gummed up...

when you pulled the plug out was it wet or dry? do you smell any gas when turning the motor over? that could answer more questions.

try putting the charger on the battery when your cranking. you just might need a boost. i wouldt spray too much starting fluid in the cylinder as it offers no lubrication, it could possibly damage the motor.

try tapping the carb with a back of the screw driver, the fuel float maybe stuck. or you can suck on the vacume line connected to the tank that might have seized and just need a good vacume to get it to move again. if it doesnt move with vacume then your carb isnt getting any fuel..

good luck

generally when a 2 stroke wont start like that its the spark plug even if they still look good they can be bad.Ive had plugs that still put out spark but my engine wouldnt start i put in a new one,and it started right up try a brand new plug.

My wild guess.

1 of 2 things...

There is no fuel in the carb... To test this, pull the fuel line off and then crank the engine and see if fuel comes out..

or... the electric starter isn't spinning it fast enough and you need to kick start it...

do you mean hold the throttle open half way while pressing the starter switch?

yes or even when ur kicking it. to give a little more fuel to start it.

The best thing to do is something simple ok. pull your air box off take a hose and pour some premixed gas right where the opening is when you pull the airbox off. just pour into the carb that will save you $75. o_o

WARNING= THREAD HI-JACK AHEAD

Just wondering- I am having issues with my new Derbi. When I 1st bought it I thought I was able to get it up to 50MPH. It was cold and I just glanced down but am almost sure it was 50.

I forget to turn the key off, killing my battery. Now I have to kick start it when I ride, my plug has been fouled and I can't get over 32MPH.

?- would the battery have any thing to do with this? I thought once it was started the battery had nothing to do with it, however could trying to charge my dead battery be it or ___?

The battery makes the turn signals work and turns over the motor but not strong enough to start it.. The head/tail lights only work when the motor is running- connected directly to it or some thing the dealer said...

- connected directly to it or some thing the dealer said... The Magneto Maybe?

I had the same Problem by leaving the Unit On. but it sounds like a Battery marylandmark, the turn signals are hooked up to the battery it self all so fusebox and Break lights, you dont have any AMPS to Kickover the STARTER

When engine is Started you can run Headlights, The Magneto Adds more Power from the Battery to run the Lights

I live in Buffalo...have had my Zuma in the garage all winter, with fuel stabilizer, and started it every two-three weeks to keep the battery up.

Took it out today, saw the plug was oily, changed it. It ran slow for a block then fired right up for a 5 mile ride just fine.

The Pirelli SL26'es are sitting in the garage...figure I'll get a few more miles out of the Cheng Shin's.

My insurance is $212 for full blown 25/50k$ comp, collision.

Bought a Bell Mag8 helmet...the face shield works really well...a LOT more coverage than my HJC half helmet.
