Is this good info?

I asked my mechanic what the rollers do and do I need some on my new scoot to keep it in the powerband since I am putting a pipe on it.

He said that they drilled the stock rollers out, making them lighter which saved me some money by drilling out the stock rollers instead of having to buy a "bigger" roller. The difference is the weight of the roller itself so by drilling them out you end up with the same net effect without the cost in hardware. It takes a little extra time but not enough to warrant buying the other rollers unless you were thinking to keep extras and change them back and forth depending on your performance interests at the time.

What are rollers and how do they work?

They are the mechanical part that opens and closes spreads the variator (ie cluch/transmition) as a result of centrifugal force developed by the rpms of the engine. More RPM more centrifugal force causing the roller to "roll outward" from the crank shaft (which it is attached to) thereby closing the variator which in turn raises the drive belt further up the front "pulley" effectively changing the "gear ratio" of the engine. The different weights of the rollers effects how quickly the rollers "roll", thereby effecting how quickly the "gears" engage. There are no gears or transmition.

The definition is good.

I drilled out some rollers once. The only reason I did it was to find the right weight, then BUY the proper weight. IT IS NOT EASY ;no to drill out rollers. Plus you have to be carefull to keep them even. It is ALOT more trouble than its worth.........
