What are my choices on Up Gear Kits? How is the one from provo?

as far as I know... malossi and polini make them... depending on the scooter model...

The malossi and polini are both good... depends on the amount of increase your looking for...

provo sells the malossi ones..

ive seen some on the auction site for dirt cheap.. but from UK i think the shipping will be a killer. the ones i saw had only a gear no shafts.. in some other kits i saw 1st stage, 2nd stage and 3rd stage, kind of like the power stages.. i have to search a little to find that site again.. but there are definetly many different kind of gear ratio out there.

Just look around. Primary gears that fit a Yamaha Aerox or MBK Booster will fit the Zuma.

I found some sites selling some. Do I need the primary gears, secondary gears, or both?

the zuma can only use the secondary gears...

it's the one that the rear shaft is connected to...

Does anyone have experience with the Malossi kit from provo? How much top end did you get?

I do... But my scooter was stage 3 at the time... and I got 5 or so mph increase...

however had some belt slip issues....

I found a Polini set of gears. They are a 13:33 or however your write it. The front or first gear is a 13 which has 13 teeth, and the second or rear gear is a 33 which they explained has 33 teeth.

How many gears come in the malossi kit? Is it 2 as well?

Where do the gears sit in the bike, by the clutch area?

What kind of gains do you think I will see?

Thanks.

yes the malossi ones are the same set up... you switch 2 gears out.. taking the diaginal cut stock and making them a straight cut and increasing the number of teeth...

They are located in the rear of the tranny... usually in a seperate "case" that is filled with oil... make sure you drain the oil before removing the bolts that hold this cover in place... or it'll leak all over everything...

Gains: it all depends on riding conditions, weight & tune of scooter, other parts you have installed...

there are so many variables... it's impossible to tell... don't expect anything to crazy...

The first gears I tried were DR 15/50s with stock T6/19mm/RS70. About a 22% increase. Hated them. Lower acceleration, no top speed increase. Just cruised at a lower rpm. With the overrange I had to go with gears. Changes the overall reduction and had me geared way too low. Installed Malossi 14/42s for about 20%. The scooter is still geared very low, but I like it this way because I don't care about top speed (currently 60.0 at 13.5K). Those Polini gears are a +60% increase and you're not gonna be happy with acceleration.

Did you guys install the gears yourselves?

Are the Malossi the ones that provo sells the 14/42?

yes... they are the 14/42 ones...

I installed one of them myself... however damaged the nut while I was at it...

It cost me $7 to press the other one in... at a local shop

What is DR?

I don't really know how to determine the increase. But if you say 60% that to me sounds good. You say that the acceleration is not going to be good. How bad is it going to be? Is it going to craaaaawwwwllll? Or is it just going to accelerate slowly, like when you put on a pipe and don't upjet?

If I put on a overrange wouldn't that help the acceleration?

Thanks.

think about it.. your taking the stock gearing (who knows what it is...) and adding a 60% upgear to it...

it's gonna take more HP and torque to push the scooter as fast as ou currently are running... The set up I had before my corsa/R, polini pipe, and over range, the gears made a little difference... the over range makes it take off like mad...

If you go with a 60% upgear, you will almost definately need the over range to push it... the 20% upgear can work fine with a stock style tranny set up...

Guys report that with a T6/19mm-type setup you can get some big top speeds, like +70, with the big gears and a lot of highway. It cuts acceleration a bunch. With the overrange 20% gears get you back to about a stock overall setup, so the big gears would work much better. With a lot of power you can melt clutches with the big gears. Tons of slip, tons of heat. DR makes a full range of scooter tuning stuff. They are, I think, the low-cost division of TP.

So then if I stick with a stock set up for a tranny the Malossi Gears would do me the best.

If I go with say a overrange then the Polini would be good.

Thanks.

I'd say everybody has different expectations and different opinions on gears. Unless you have a lot of horses your acceleration will suffer a lot with tall gears, but some guys want top end so much they don't mind. I think the Malossi 14/42 is a good setup on the Zuma. It's pretty much the standard upgear for mid-performance scooters.
