The starter on my Vino has never worked...I'm not 100% sure its my battery and im just about to spend 100.00 on a new one. Is there anyway of knowing for sure that it's the battery and not somthing else?

I tried to recharge the batt last season but no luck.

$100 on a battery??? that is TOO much!!! Take your battery to an auto parts store, they will tell you if it is good/bad.

If it has been dead since last season, chances are its no good ;no

I've not priced a replacement battery for my Vino yet as it's so new to me and the battery on mine works fine. Still... $100 sounds really steep. I did put a new battery in my Honda Twinstar last summer and it was only around $20.

One thing you can do is put a volt meter on your battery. If it's fully charged it will show a bit over 12v. Then with your Vino on the centerstand start the engine and rev it with the volt meter still attached. A healthy charging system will show between 13 and 14 volts. Finally turn your engine off, observe that volts drop back to at or just above 12v, and then push the starter button. If you see a big drop in voltage then your battery is likely bad.

If all your volts check out you may have a problem in your starter system.

Bring it to Autozone/Pep Boys, etc. & check it out--maybe it can be recharged? If not look here (http://www.provoscooter.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=21&products_id=154)
Provo sells them for $60

well i hooked up the battery to a volt meeter and it get's a reading of 12.6 V. So i'm assuming the the battery is not at fault here, what should i be looking for now? the starter itself?

p.s. when i put the starter button, nothing happens, nothing at all.

hold it!!! Just because the battery reads 12 volts does not mean it is good. ;no You are more concerned about AMPs instead of volts..... Like I said, take it to an auto parts store, and they will put a "load" on the battery to determin if there are any cranking amps left in that battery ;)

hey im not trying to sound like a smartass but are u pulling in one of ur brake handles while pushing the button? plus i notice on my zuma that i have to pull the rear brake lever a little farther than my front to get the button to work.

good call.. some people don't know to do this...

you must pull the break handle... but on a side note...

if you starter is bad... the relay will still click loudly (it's located by the spark plug on the right side of the frame... little tiny black box)... I don't use my starter and it's completely disconnected but the relay still clicks as I never unhooked it... might test that...

A bad battery can still show 12+ volts under a no load condition. That's why I said to check it with the starter engaged. A good battery will still show 12+ volts under starter load, but a bad battery will show a drastic drop in voltage. This is usually due to sulfation, a build-up of sulfur deposits between plates.

If your battery can hold enough charge to show 12.6V under no-load it should at least make a click sound when the solenoid closes. It sounds to me like you have a problem in your starter system, possibly the starter solenoid, the start switch, or the wires running from the switch. Also, I'm wondering if there is a fuse anywhere in the starter circuit.

most scooters have a fuse at the battery only.. it fuses the whole scooter from a single fuse...

I took the old school tube style fuse out and put the newer flat plug in style in it's place

make sure your battery terminals are free of corrosion.. if there are any, it will give you tempermental starter...
