View Full Version : Fuel consumption?

Even though I haven't really completed the breakin on my 05 Zuma (200+ miles so far), I am not sure what range of gas mileage I should be seeing. I weigh about 210 and am 6' 1" tall. The performance seems pretty good for stock and I really don't have any desire to upgrade with mods at this time. So far I am getting around 60 mpg. I guess this is nothing to complain about but I keep seeing claims of 85 + from other scooters brands. I even get in the high 40s on my 82 KZ 1000. Am I expecting too much (maybe too soon)?

A lot of variables determine ultimate fuel consumption. First of all, as your Zuma is a two stroke it simply burns more fuel than a four stroke of equal displacement... after all, it has twice as many power strokes for a given rpm. Also, we do tend to spend a lot of time running wide open on our little 49cc scoots. If you back off and spend all your time at half throttle and 30 mph your gas mileage will improve tremendously. If I ride my Honda Twinstar (185cc parallel twin 4 stroke) gently I can get 90 mpg out of it, but on the interstate at a steady 70 mph it drops to 60 mpg. On my Vino (same engine as your's but with a Stage One kit including Next R pipe) I still spend a lot of time running wide open and seem to be getting about 70 mpg. So you see, the fuel economy on my Vino is comparable to my Twinstar, even though my Twinstar's engine is over three times as big. And lastly, I weigh 130 lbs and my Vino's empty weight is 150 lbs. Your 49cc engine is having to push a heavier scoot and heavier rider, so your gas mileage will be lower than mine, all else being equal. Some of the people with Stage Two and higher Vinos and Zumas report gas mileage of around 30 to 40 mpg. That's getting into car-mileage territory.
I do have more fun on my Vino though! ;)

Thanks for the input. I guess I still drive with the rocket mentality. Need for speed and all that. Guess I need to loose that extra 15# I have been carrying around.

LOL Thanks Jered and Mark... you guys are great! :)
I do think he sincerely meant it as a compliment so I'm not upset. It did come out rather sexist though.
Years ago a friend and former co-worker at my carrier got a position as a check pilot doing training and checkrides (flight tests), our first female check pilot. She told me that when she reported for duty the first day a couple of the male check pilots were standing around in the simulator building and one of them actually had the nerve to tell her she didn't belong there. She went on to become the senior check pilot on the DC-9 and eventually the 737.
I say former coworker because she recently took a position as head of UPS's pilot training devision down in Florida. I miss Becky.
Some guys just seem amazed when a "gal" can do a "man's" job as well or better.

Compliment accepted, zumaman. You might want to word it a little differently next time is all. ;)
And please do keep posting. It's nice to have you on the boards! :)
Sincerely,
Erika

after i read this thread i decided to check my fuel milage. im 5-11 and weigh 220ish pounds. i rode for a week on a tank. i also run my 05 zuma (now with 320 miles on her) at wot all the time and average 37-42 mph. i got 56 miles on 1.07 gallon of gas. i think that is damn good for hallin my big but around and ridin on a good bit of hills. seeing that my car gets 19-25mpg im not complaining at all.

I got 70-75mpg stock. Still get better than 40mpg, and I'm far from stock.
