anyone take the pipe off after a season and soak it in solvant to get all the nasty black gunk out of the inside? I assume our silencer will get clogged after a while and become louder too... has anyone dont this already?

if you want to clean your pipe out, take off the silencer and take your pipe to the radiator shop and have them boil it out. thats the best way to do it.

I repack my silencer every month or two. Never even considered cleaning the inside of the pipe. I figure deposits prevent rusting from the inside out.

Hi Pinky :)

I'm curious... what do you use to repack your silencer?

I've only put a couple hundred miles in my next R pipe since there's been so few ridable days since installation. Once it warms up I'll be doing more than that in week's riding, so repacking my silencer is something I know I'm going to have to become familiar with.

I read somewhere (forget where) that you can use some sort of generic fiberglass insulation that can be bought at any hardware store. I'll have to see if I can find that info again.

Do they sell silencer packing at motorcycle shops?

i've heard people re-packing, I know pinky and rydah do it...

whats the point? Who cares if the pipe is loud? I'm guessing this is why you guys do this?

Hiya Jered :)

I was thinking maybe exhaust deposits would build up on the packing and increase backpressure, which would in turn decrease performance. The packing does act somewhat as a filter, after all.

Perhaps this isn't the case though. I'm sure Pinky and Rydah can enlighten us.

This thread also got me to thinking... I wonder if over time enough deposits can built up in an expansion chamber to affect the reflections of positive and negative pressure waves inside the chamber, perhaps changing wave strength or timing. Sound waves do reflect best off of hard smooth surfaces, after all. As 2 stroke smoke is pretty oily and loaded with particulates I'd imagine the build-up of deposits can get pretty thick over time. I think this needs researched.

hence why people do this... we had a discussion a month and a half ago about getting them cleaned... it started as I saw a pipe, that had an access port to allow for easy "brush cleaning" the inside of the pipe... but it was for larger engines... I think the chemical bath is a good idea every once in a while to clean them out... as yes... they can get pretty nasty...

heck my new pipe (8 miles on it) is spitting black spray out... probably cause I need to run it... but you know...

Maybe a propain afterburner to clean it out on a regular basis... and for the flame thrower effect! Might just work!

Jered,

I can't wait til summer arrives and you can let us know how your scoot runs. I just know it's going to be fast!

I'm starting to think about maybe putting a 70cc on my Vino. I'm happy with the speed on my stage one but hill climbing is still pretty weak and it is very hilly here. If I do I want to go more for dependability than all out performance. We will discuss later. ;)

umm... pipe cleaning? repacking? i should be doing this? OOPS.

i've put about... 3 thousand miles on my RS pipe, it's getting pretty black and... uh.. yeah, some more info on this please?? It also does seem to be louder than it used to be... hrmm.. repack....

increased back pressure from not repacking? when i looked into my silenser, RS, it was a straight thru with perforated pipe. if that perforated pipe is no longer with all the deposit.. then it will just become straight thru and little louder... at least that what i assume..

when i used to take apart moped mufflers and put bigger holes in them.. the carbon deposits were so bad that some holes size of 1/4 inch were clogged with black gunk.. so im sure soak bath would be benefitial..

i didnt know radiator shops can do that.. how much does it cost?

I don't think repacking has any material effect on jetting. Sometimes I seem to be rich for a few miles, but I think it's more my ears than the engine. New packing in the silencer can make a huge difference in sound levels. I use 3" fiberglass insulation from Home Depot. Comes in a roll for about 3 bucks. Good for three or four jobs. That, plus some steel wool, and you're in (dirty, nasty) business.

how about a how to on this???? some nasty pics and its all good :)

i always wondered, how tight does the packing have to be?

You just want the packing firm. The important thing is to get it fully under the cap at the tail pipe end and keep it there when you reinstall. Just unbolt the silencer, take it off, put the nuts back on temporarily and hit them with a hammer to separate the thing. Pull out the old stuff, stretch out a roll of steel wool and wrap it around the center, wrap fiberglass around that, and stick it back together. Nasty, itchy job but it only takes a few minutes.

you want to repack your silincer to keep the back pressure good like when the pipe was new. the reason some guys in this forum are packing there pipes plenny is because they are using the cheap stuff (hardware store). on a 2stroke you want that deep rumble low pitch, not that ear piercing noise. when you get the R's up you want people to know but not to cry. the best, most quiet, and longest lasting packing is called silent sport. moose racing and fmf both have that stuff, it comes in strings and looks like skinny yarn, either red (fmf) or white on the other brand. this stuffs last longer than 1 complete racing season. for us moped guys thats at least 2 to 3 years of use and it doesnt burn out like the cheap stuff. just remember when you repack your silencer clean that baffle with a wire brush.

Ok..I know some of the Re-packers probably won't do a "How to"...but...can you at least post a pic on how you open up a factory sealed silencer..Hammer on the three bolts??.....also...Pinky...and Rydah ...what brand of pipe do you have??....thanks...John
