So i have a 2005 zuma with 5300 miles on it. It starts up fine and starts nice, but after a minute or so while just idling on the kickstand, a loud clunking noise or rattle starts. I have no idea what its from or were it is coming from. The weird thing is, when i pull the throttle, the clunking noise stops, but shortly after not on the throttle, it starts up again. does anyone have any ideas what this is and should i be worried. It drives totally fine though. No loss of power what so ever.

Your belt could be slipping very badly. 5300 miles means its time to look at that belt if its bone stock. Take the side cover off and take a gander at the belt and let it idle and look and listen.

Is the bike stock? if not list the mod(s) in your signature. If its stock put that in your signature.

It is not stock. It has a Leo Vince performance exhaust. Athena 70cc big bore kit and some other stuff to make that kit possible. like the rollers, gears, stuff like that. I bought it from my cousin.

It is not the belt..a belt doesnt make any noise...

Check your variator..if it goes away when you rev its obvious its that...

make sure your bolt is securely tightened on the variator and the washer behind the fan isnt in bad condition.

Also; check for movement in the crankshaft. See if the variator wobbles when the scooter is running. When the transmission side crankshaft bearing started to go on my scooter; it sounded a lot like the sound you describe.

I just ran into a similar problem, but mine sounded like a bearing was bad at idle, after tearing everything apart it was my belt. If I squeeze it, it will squeak but at idle that squeak made into a nasty sound. I added a shim and its gone. Would only happen when its hot. Its a new 200 mile malossi super x belt.

+1. The belt causing that is a bad suggestion, though at 5300 miles it should be replaced for other reasons. The most likely cause of the rattle is the variator, it could be flat spotted rollers, or worn guides, or the vario being loose. I would guess your crank is ok with your setup too.

A belt that is worn will never help things. Variators that have the conical spring aka the bowed out round washer that are worn will not keep the variator in place and offer some resistance. If it is worn out it will affect the front drive face. Make sure it is nice and tight and replace the star washer, conical spring washer and 17mm nut and make sure they are torque down properly.
