I just purchased a 2001 Yamaha Vino 50cc. What can I do to get more speed? It goes approx. 25mph.
Thanks

4,000, very well kept. Is there a restrictor in the carb?

Not exactly, there are two main restrictors on your bike, there is one in the exhaust down pipe right where it bolts to the manifold, and the other is a clutch restrictor washer which only allows the clutch to open a limited amount.
for more deatailed instructions on how to perform these derestrictions see the how to section on provoscooter.com

I took off the muffler and see the restrictor which I will remove. I don't see the how to section on the clutch restrictor washer, can you direct me or tell how to remove it.

1. Take the cvt transmission cover off you will see two clutch systems:
a.) The one on the left called the Primary/Variator.
b.) The one on the right includes the secondary/driven pulley which drives a centrifugal clutch.
2. The Clutch restrictor is located on the primary clutch.
3. Remove the Nut that holds the clutch system on the crankshaft, I usually use a impact wrench because it is kind of hard to do it with a socket and ratchet.
4. The nut will come off and there is a washer behind it followed by a kick start contact point followed by a star key and finally followed by the outer clutch halve.
5. Carefully slide these components off.
6. When these are off you will see a little washer about a 1/4 inch thick and I know that it fits on my ring finger, you should see it sitting on the metal dowel which slides on the crankshaft.
7. Carefully slide the washer/ring off.
8. Reinstall the following components in this order: Clutch halve; star key; kick start contact; washer; followed by the nut which I tighten on also with the impact wrench.
9. Reinstall the cvt Trans cover and giver a go.
Note: if you don’t see a washer/ring it could possibly be taken off already...

That is practically nada mileage for a 2001. Being a 2001 I thought it may have high mileage and some of your slowness could be due to a worn belt. But at 4000 miles the belt should still be gtg. There are videos on the internet that will take you through the variator de-restriction step by step. The exhaust restriction is just a matter of removing the exhaust pipe and then removing the washer. If it has one.

I saw one video talking about drilling out weights. What does this do and how much do you drill out?

klotzy_550 you had me confused.. you kept called the variator the primary clutch..... the clutch is mounted to the drive gears not the driveshaft.. anywho theres LOS LINKS to the Variator Deregulation
good luck and have fun with your new found addiction,,,...,,,...

It is known as both, there are three clutches on vino; variator -> Driven clutch-> Centirifugal clutch. I just come from a different background, when I first learned about CVT transmissions it was on snowmobiles, the clutch on the crank is the primary and the other is the driven. All in all it is the same thing.

Yamaha calls the variator a sheave or something similar to that. The variator is the only one with the washer restriction. So when talking about de-restricting it, the term "variator" should be used to prevent confusion..

Before you remove the big nut that holds the variator (Or primary sheave) in place it's really useful to scribe marks across the end of the crankshaft, the side of the hold down nut, and the face of the variator .This way you can turn your air impact wrench just high enough to break the nut loose, then when you reinstall the nut just align the marks. It makes it pretty hard to apply too much torque to the nut....And you avoid an expensive repair at a local machine shop! Gabe::usa::

You don't want to go there....The stock rollers are probably in the 6gr area. For more performance, install a bit lighter weights. (like in the 3.5gr to 4gr range) Jeremy Hall at enviromoto is an MRP (Martin Racing Performance) Dealer & he can supply you with the high tech Dr.Pulley sliding weights MRP markets. They accelerate more smoothly than rollers and last longer. Joel Martin is on Facebook as "Martin Racing Dealer." You can go there and ask him what he thinks is best for your Vino....However, he only markets to his Dealers like Enviromoto. Gabe::usa::

I dont know if you have done these mods yet, but all I can say is WOW! I did the exhaust mod today and picked up a full 10 mph. Went from 28 to 38. And even better the thing takes off so quick it feels like it is about to wheelie! Hope to get to the variator mod tomorrow. Mine is an 05 Vino.

Just in case anyone is hesitant to do this mod....all I can say is holy crap! Pulled my plug and reallized after investigating, I had about an #85 main Jet in there. Got a #76, no air box mods yet, no variator mod yet, just the exhaust de-restriction, and I hit approx 44 on the speedo today. And a little tug on the bars yeilds a pretty good wheelie. This is up from about 28 dead stock. Im impressed! Im betting an easy 50mph with the variator mod, and a little work with the airbox and upjetting. I think for pretty much no money, thats pretty good.

Right?! This was a very simple mod. This is my gf's machine, and she likes the awesome takeoff it has, but I may do the variator mod just to see how it reacts.

Didnt change the variator, just pulled the washer out from behind the faceplate. Did the same thing to my C3 and it picked up about 6-7 mph.

Dayum!! Pulled the variator back off today. I decided to see what would happen if I pulled the real thick spacer the same size as the Boss (or whatever that is that goes between the variator pulleys) out. I already took the thin metal washer out before, so now they are both out. Crazy little sucker goes what appears to be 47mph or so. Its hard to tell because its so far past the 40 mark. I had also taken the snorkle out of the airbox and went up 2 sizes in jets. That puts me up to a #79 jet from the stock #64. And to be clear i have also de-restricted the exhaust. 47mph with no aftermarket parts seems pretty good to me! Takes off like a rocket too! Cant imagine what this would do with a little lighter sliders in the variator.

Hi, I just got a 2002 Vino and took the exhaust off to find the bolts were loose to the head and the restrictor was removed, one thing I was wondering, is the exhaust port not the same size/shape as the header pipe? How does changing the jet affect your fuel consuption? Did you check the plug for the correct ratio or just wing it?
buguy
03-14-2011, 12:13 AM
Mine had the restrictor in the pipe, and to be honest, I didnt look into the cyl to see the shape. Obviously the bigger jet uses more fuel. And yes, you look at the plug to see if your jetting is right. Too white is lean and too black is rich. You want a nice even tan color. After more time on the scooter and more tuning, im back down to the 74 jet and its dead on. I also should tell you I have since the last post gotten a GPS, and it tops out right at 40 mph with the pipe de-retstricted and the variator washer pulled out. Thats all I have done to it. It needs more speed to keep up with traffic here so I ordered a 70cc kit for it last week. When I take it apart to put the kit on, I will have a look at the exhaust port for you.

I did the Var-dereg yesterday and I only get about 38 on mine, I haven't pulled the plug yet, but I am wondering if it is fouled from the previous owners use. I will pull it today and clean it ( I work at the airport so I have access to an aircraft spark plug cleaning tool). I will probably have a look at the air filter as well cuz I am guessing it has never been cleaned.

Yeah check your jet good! I eneded up with a 74 main in ours. Also I took out the snorkle on the air box. With both de-restricts, snorkle taken out, and the upped main we get 42 mph. I had to mess with the air/fuel screw too to get that. I think I actually ended up turning it in more (richening it) to squeez the last 2 mph out of it.

So I pulled the plug and it was caked up pretty good, but the color was not too bad not white not black but a milk chocolate brown. I put it in the plug cleaner and reinstalled it and got about 1-2 mph extra out of it!! I will pull the air cleaner next and see how it looks.

Thats better, but you really should spring for the $2.50 and get a new one! BPR7HS NGK is what i would get. In fact I would get a couple so you have them on hand.

Also, There's the old backyard mechanic trick of going to the next taller size of tire out back. You may have to raise the fender a bit to assure that it doesn't rub. Works on this end! ::usa::

Be sure and blow the wee bit of glass bead that is always left inside of a spark plug cleaned on a blasting machine, with a blow nozzle....::usa::

It's taken a year and a half to get it nearly finished. I still need to replace the airbox to throttlebody duct, with one the same size on each end as the new throttlebody's air inlet. The scoot should really "Walk the dog" then! ::usa::

well I have mine doing 63km/h or about 40 mph but would like to get more out of her. The gas mileage is not the greatest and I bought it to save on insurance and gas so I can't justify spending big bucks on her. I hope to get 50 mph out of her without too much fussing around but we will see....;wink)

I can tell you after messing with this thing....A LOT. 42 is the best I can get it with stock parts. I have researched a ton and most guys arent getting crap with a performance pipe on the stock bore, nor a performance variator. Sooooo...I put a big bore 70cc kit on it. It does low 50's easy now and pulls like a train.

EVERYTHING besides the bore is dead stock. Belt, variator, rollers, airbox, carb, clutch, springs....all of it. I did take the snorkle out of the airbox though and it has an 85 main jet in the carb and the needle moved up one clip position.
